Action failure….scared the Poo out of me!!

I’ve always loved single shot firearms, the more unusual the better. However, yesterday I experienced an action failure while shooting my model 71 Mauser Uruguay 6.5x53.5R Daudeteau conversion. The firing pin broke at the spot that retains the spring and pierced the primer which resulted in the rear part of the bolt being blown out of the back of the bolt body which broke the lens on my shooting glasses plus a small cut on my thumb. Fortunately, I was shooting a light cast bullet load with 12 grains of unique powder. It could have been a lot worse. I looked at the break on the firing pin and noticed it had been previously repaired at the point that broke. There was no way to see the repair before it broke, I checked out the rifle when I got it years ago. You can never know the history of 150 year old gun. There was no damage to the gun except for the broken firing pin. To say the least I got lucky.   Now I’m on the hunt for a model 71 Mauser firing pin.

Trying to picture just what broke and what came out the back. Pictures please. I have two 71s. One was a 6.5 but now wears an Aydt barrel in 8.15x46R. The other, a carbine, is still a 43 Mauser.

Thanks, Steven. I'll have to take mine down and give it an exam.

I've seen one of those Uruguayan conversions, almost bought it.  Glad I didn't.

Here are my two. The 43 Mauser has a perfect bore. The 8.15x46R's Aydt barrel has a grooved rib and now wears a long eye relief scope in clamp on rings and has a really nice trigger. These are well made single shots. I once had a 71/84 which is the tubular magazine repeater. It came in what looked like factory cosmoline it was so perfect. The machining was custom quality.
