[SOLD] .22LR Ballard That Needs Some Love

Print Post
For Sale: .22LR Ballard Rifle

This rifle "has potential" as they say down home.

The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly ...

It is a double-set trigger cast action. The triggers set as designed, but the hammer will rarely cock. The hammer may have a worn or damaged sear notch.
The Schoyen style buttstock and forearm are both very well done and the checkering is sharp. The forearm has a palm rest.
The barrel is a puzzle. It measures approx. 25-1/2" long and is stamped " A.W. PETERSON. DENVER. COLO". It has one set of half moon cuts for Pope-style rings. It is drilled and tapped with scope blocks, but it also has other holes drilled, tapped, and filled -and- dovetails with blanks inserted.
The muzzle is counterbored and does not look relined. However, the breech leaves a lot of questions. It looks bored off-center. From the breech end, it looks relined, or maybe its just the the chamber length (?). I don't know and we don't have anyone to ask. It shoots well (see target).

Price: $1,325 includes shipping via US Priority Mail

First "I'll take it" gets it -and- I will donate $10 to the ASSRA

Can someone explain the square cutouts on the breach face? I'm dense.

Ballards may be weaker,
but they sure are neater!

Likely this barrel was on a firearm once that had dual extractors. Since it was likely set back when it got installed on the Ballard that's all that remains of the extractor cuts.

Another interesting note are the two rear Pope style cuts. Schoyen and Peterson did those on rifles that Peterson supplied scopes for I own two Schoyen marked rifles with the cuts at the rear position.

The barrel at the breech was offset for a centerfire breech block would be my guess.
