Tried my sled idea at Raton a few weeks ago. Twelve inch patterns. Back to the drawing board.

Here's my Hoch space gun forestock. Looks bad, shoots good. There is a solid aluminium hanger attached to the action. Reminds me of a coffin. It's the only rifle I rest on the forestock.

What a co-nky-dink. I just got back from the range where I shot two of my rifles with large flat bottom forends.  First up is Fat Boy AKA The Grey Rat.  He features a 26" heavy 1.2"+ 16 twist Bresien barrel in 32-40 and Zettler DST Triggers. A classic BPJACK parts gun, all the components came from different sources. The forend is a bit too long in my estimation.  The black tape indicates the current position on my front bag.  It has never shot that well until today when I tried a Lyman 319289 'Hudson' bullet at 200 yds.  And yes, the barrel needs some serious refinishing.

Here is my two;

Hoch has two 3/8 rods into a block on the face of the action, then captured by 5/16" bolts in the front of the forearm.

Borchardt has the forearm mounted to a piece attached to the bottom of the barrel either forearm touch the barrel, at all.

You feel better about your big ugly stock now, don't you Bob?

I prefer resting the barrel on the bag right in front of a standard length forend. My main match 32-40 high wall shoots the best that way. The few rifles I have where I rest on the wood just don’t shoot well on the barrel. The Fat Boy won’t remain upright unless resting on the stock which has a slightly flat bottom about an inch and a half wide. And yes where it contacts the bag is very important. My rest has a provision for an adjustable stop but when experimenting with position I use tape to help position it consistently. With its heavy barrel and a standard length forend it just does not balance well with do much forward weight. Yesterday was the first time it shot that well. New bullet and increased velocity did the trick.
