Spokane Fires

In so many ways I've always regretted leaving the big Western states especially Idaho. Then I read and watching the film of these big fires and shortage of water out West and guess I'm lucky here in Michigan.

Good old railroad buddy I worked with and went to college with moved to Spokane to marry his love. He sent me a message three days ago describing how that fire came right to the Spokane River NW side. Most everybody figured a river that size was a natural reliable fire break. Wrong, with the hot weather the sap has been climbing up the timber and that fire line went ' crown ' the tree tops literally exploded and it went right over the river he said. Sure hope none of you guys are caught up in this disaster. Sure wish I could help

Rick

The three Spokane fires were started by one arsonist. A 37 yr. old ex con who has a history of previous arson. He got caught because he stupidly told strangers he did it in a bar and they called the police. I can only hope he never sees the outside of a prison cell again.

Hey Rick,
I’m with you.  Currently spending a few days on Grand Traverse Bay.  Beautiful sand beaches and wonderful (unsalted) water.  The Bay gets to 600 ft deep so it’s a formidable body of water.
Enjoyed the features of many other States, but always look forward to returning here on the Peninsula.
Mike.

I drove through Spokane on my way back from Alaska. (August 10th I believe) even my dogs were coughing.

From the Spokane Rifle Club Web page dated 8/15/26

WHAT HAPPENED?
On August 1st, 2026, Spokane Rifle Club sustained significant damage from the Old Trails Fire (later renamed Spokane Complex Fires).

WHAT IS THE STATUS OF THE CLUB?
The club is currently closed. Access to the range is limited to first responders, elected officers, insurance adjusters, and qualified advisors working on safety and cleanup.

WHAT ARES WERE IMPACTED?
The north clubhouse was destroyed.
The shotgun clubhouse was destroyed.
The 100 yard line and some of the 100 yard baffles were destroyed.
The 100 yard impact area eyebrow was destroyed.
The outdoor pistol range was destroyed.
The 200/300/600 yard berms appear untouched however are unusable due to the destruction of the eyebrow timbers at the impact area.
The indoor range is still standing but has suffered some smoke damage. We have power but no water or restroom facilities. All fans and lights are in working order. One lane is down, which needs to be repaired and some target holders need repair. Estimates are that the indoor range may become operational in short order pending city, state, parks occupation permits and mitigation of other locations at the range as well as other unknown considerations.

People who think they know everything are a great annoyance to those of us who do.

RE: Spokane Rifle Club

Thanks Jack.

Many memories of being a “Trap Boy” setting birds at the trap range back in the mid-60’s on weekends.  Our neighbor, Ray Hullick, was the driving force in getting the trap shooting program going at the club.
