Short post, 

David Tubbs “High Power Rifle” paperback is listed on EBay used average price about  20 dollars. His earlier book must be in short supply much more expensive Pulled my well worn copy off the shelf.  47 pages on offhand, mine full of highlighted sections that I thought worthy . Guessing 90% applies to our rifles. Believe I bought it around 1995

It’s the best guide available.

David was a great competitor with a string of national championships to his credit. He was a fantastic off hand shot but he wasn’t the only one. 
Once in the early nineties the Tompkins family attended our local match on their way across the country to Camp Perry. Nancy won that match with a 799, dropping one point off hand! 
I don’t know if anyone has ever cleaned the 800 point course of fire. I wouldn’t be surprised to know that it’s been done as there are some very skillful off hand shooters out there.

I read one of his articles on dealing with wind. I still use his method.  Mr Tubb may not remember the article but I do.   Smiley

David passed in July. Only 71, too young.

Back in 1990 I bunked with a Polish guy at Camp Perry ( Pistol ) and he gave me a book just as we were driving out. The matches got washed out and cancelled the place was a mud hole so we left. Got home opened the book and it was in Russian. He explained it was a compendium of Russian training manuals with lots of photos. I gave it away figuring I could find this book translated in English but still haven't. I was told the Russian trainers used all types of techniques including light self-hypnosis, self acupuncture and pinching your ears, ( really ) 
to steady your nerves, etc etc.  Anyway it would probably worth somebody's time to find that book.

The “ Russian Book”  Competitive Shooting by A.A. Yur’Yev  was translated into English by Gary Anderson and published by the NRA. Original version 1957 upgraded 1973.  My third edition published 1988 Today eBay has half a dozen copies 100 to 225 dollars depending on edition and condition.

It’s very detailed, example which nerves translate eye to triggger pull and much more. 397 pages with some details few will take the time to read.  Lots of ballistics wind effects etc. whole chapter on trigger pulls. It covers every type of rifled barrel firearm competition. Nothing on shotguns bows etc.

Whole sections with dozens of photos of Russians in position showing various styles.  Some with the shooters stripped down to briefs so there exact position detail is shown Don’t recommend trying that at your club 

It’s interesting but money best spent on Tubbs Book.

Boats, I surely think that is the book I had. I was unable to decipher it but when you said photos with guys in their briefs in different shooting positions I then knew it's the same book. I gave up trying to find an English language version like 20 plus years ago. But thanks for sorting this out for me.

Only reason I bought a copy was to add to my shooting library. Not real expensive at the time and interesting to thumb through. Much more detail that I needed or could absorb.

Really all aspiring offhand shooters need is Tubbs book

I found a copy of Tubb's book at Half Price Books a few weeks ago and I recommend it to anyone interested in rifle shooting. It focuses on High Power of course but the concepts apply to most rifle sports. 
One thing in particular that might be controversial is that he recommends canting the rifle so as to avoid having to tilt your head, thereby maintaining an upright head position and not compromising your balance. I endorse almost everything he has to say about offhand shooting but I have my doubts about this recommendation. He has the record to back up his credentials, but as they say, what works for one person might not work for everyone.
