The 438 was the only one of the Steven line of rifle scopes, that Lyman kept and sold. They came with 4 point turrets in both plane (#1) and micrometer (#2). I believe the last ones used three point turrets.
In my pursue of the Mossberg, Marlin and Walensak scopes, I found that it was the bases for those scopes also.

I have 7 or 8 of these scopes, most with the non-micrometer rear mount. I just purchased one from ebay with the better mounts. I have one with the post reticle, but I prefer the standard crosshairs. There are 438's of different lengths, 17 1/4" or so, and 15 1/4" or so I think. Which length is more common?

Not sure about the whole scope division? but they did buy the Winchester A5 scope line and sold it as the 5A. Not aware of any others.

This is what I found in researching this stuff:
Quote:
"J. Stevens purchased Cataract Tool & Optical Co. & in 1902 introduced their line of scopes that remained in production until the scope business was purchased by Lyman.
The 438 was designed in 1911 by the Stevens Co. In 1929 Lyman bought Stevens Arms scope business and this is one of the scopes Stevens made that become the 438 Field. It was a 3x scope till 1937 when they made a 4x. scope features Bausch an Lomb lenses and a 23.0 field of view @100 yards.Mounts were the same as the Lyman 5A till 1932. This series of scopes was discontinued in 1947. Also states that this scope was designed to withstand the recoils of the 1903 springfield rifle and is by no means a "modern scope".
Lyman’s purchase of Stevens optics in 1929 moved the company from its long history of iron sights and reloading equipment to the field of optics. Conveniently for this story, Stevens had bought Winchester’s optical production not long before. Ultimately, Lyman’s first scopes used Winchester tooling, Stevens designs, and Bausch and Lomb glass, sold under Lyman’s name. Even the venerable Winchester A5 would be reproduced by Lyman under the name 5A."
This is from memory so, I may be off a little. Please correct me where needed. Winchester in about 1939, came out with another line of scopes for their 22 rf rifles in 2 1/2, 5 and 8x. The 8x was introduced for the Win 75 rifle. It is said that Winchester did not make the scopes but, i think they did make the rings and they went on a wider base than the common dovetails.
It's said that the company Carolyn made the scopes. I believe they were in NY.

Frank,
My 32-40 Ballard which was my first sub 45 cal single shot, came with s Stevens 368 with Winchester A5 clickless mounts. Post reticle. My first post on this forum was asking what the value of that scope might be. I still have it.
