.22 Pope RF cartridge? (Read 387 times)

	A friend is doing some research into Stevens pocket rifles and he came across a reference in a old Stevens catalog that said they were chambered in .22 Short, .22 Long and .22 Pope RF. He asked me if I'd ever heard of a .22 Pope RF cartridge. I hadn't. Did this cartridge exist or is the catalog referring to a rifle with Pope rifling? Spud

	Spud. Peters cartridge company produced a box marked .22 STEVENS POPE ARMORY as recommended by Pope. I have long sold the box but its pictured in the Respectfully Yours H M Pope book by Gerald Kelver on page 78. I suspect this what is referred to.

They were produced by Peters from 1904-05 to about 1915, when the ammo companies switched to wartime production. They were marketed for National Guard units (and others) who had purchased Stevens-Pope (or other) barrels converting their Krags to .22 LR. They were an early match-grade .22 Long Rifle.

	Here's a picture of an original box. No notation of bullet weight. It looks to me like the reproduction box was enhanced both with color and design. Still pretty cool. It's also possible/probable that the design changed over the years. I'm not a ammunition collector so my opinion is pure speculation. But if I was making match ammo, I would want to hang onto the Pope connection as long as possible. Look how long Marlin used "Ballard rifling", generations after most shooters knew what a Ballard was.

	The cartridge pictured on the original box appears to be a 22 short .

	The advertising department often took great liberty with the actual product, both in the distant past and today. I've often wondered why they weren't proofed better

	The Oblique angle taking in both the top and the end flap may have "reduced" the apparent length of the ctg on the top.?

	I have always felt that the art on old boxes and many catalogs is very representative of the contents. I have a fair collection of boxes, sealed and open that are near ringers for what's inside to the point that actual measurement would show only small differences. Catalogs sorta vary depending on what they were trying to stuff into the pages. Most seem a little reduced- or a lot.

	It's not the boxes and catalogs I'm referring to, but the countertop and wall displays. Here's an example that Big-jeff has for sale on eBay. The cartridge has a UMC 38-55 head stamp on what appears to be a full patch jacked bullet and a rimless case, most likely a 30-06: Check out REPRODUCTION UMC Grizzle Cartridges Standing Die-Cut on eBay! (You need to *Login* or *Register* to view media files and links); This 2nd link is a reproduction he made from my cell phone picture with provided dimensions. My Dad had the original which hung in his gun shop in the 1970's and then his garage, and now my workshop.Jeff does very nice work And has reasonable prices. I would encourage others to share stuff with him so others can enjoy it in their gun/shape/reloading rooms.: Check out REPRODUCTION Remington UMC Kleanbore HI-SPEED Standing Advertising Die Cut on eBay! (You need to *Login* or *Register* to view media files and links); I'm still looking for someone to take a picture of the Ross target Stevens advertising that I was told is hanging at the Savage firearms factory and then we could ask Jeff to reproduce it. All I have ever seen of it was part of the cover art of Randy Wright's book. It would be incredible to have that in my office. I'm sorry the links I cut and pasted don't work. Type in the description and you can find it and see lots of examples of his work.
