Black powder in bottleneck cases, ie. 44/90 etc. have different fowling issues and pressure spikes than straight cases. Once one figures that out, they shoot well…..

I shoot a 40-90 BN that I like very much.  The common assessment for the 40-90 is that it quickly builds hard fouling just in front of the chamber.  I have found that to be true but it does not mean the 40-90 is not accurate.
  The 40-90 was a long range target cartridge and worthy of the pursuit.  It just has to be treated differently when dealing with fouling.  It is capable of some very impressive long range performance but to do so for long strings of shots the bore must be wiped between shots.  This is not an uncommon practice for any black powder long range target cartridges or even for 40 rod shooting with smaller black powder cartridges like the 32-40 or 38-55.
   For hunting the 40-90 has no peer for velocity and it will hold very good accuracy at hunting range and for the number of shots possible in a normal hunting situation.  My rifle will place three consecutive shots at 100 yards from a clean barrel well within acceptable hunting accuracy say about three moa without wiping.   So to summarize the 40-90 bn is the fastest of the Sharps cartridges, it can deliver top long range target accuracy with proper fouling control,  and a fella is well armed for hunting with just his rifle and three cartridges in his pocket.
   When hunting with the 40-90 bn I do carry a few extra rounds and a take down cleaning rod with patches in my day pack because sometimes I have more than one tag to fill.
