	Did Remington offer the custom features on the #4 that were available on their other models? The reason that I ask is because I just bought one with the Remington tang sight, a beach front sight and very fancy wood. The rest of the rifle looks like it's seen some sandpaper and other abuse but it's all there with what looks like a shootable bore. I paid $250 for it but I feel that the sights and the wood are worth twice that. They will go on another #4 that I own and will really dress it up.

	Since the #4 was made from 1891-1924 we're talking an era when special order features were not uncommon, and Remington had in house two custom stock makers. So I've never seen a factory high grade, but wouldn't be surprised if they did a special order. You might remove the buttstock from the action and see if there's a name stamped in the top tang inletted area. Both custom stock makers at Rem. had their own stamp and stamped their name on work they did. I've got two deluxe stocked Remington rifles stamped by their custom stock maker. One #1 Creedmoor, and one Match B Hepburn.

	Yes, it's a side lever. I'll know more when I take it apart but the barrel is stuck and is taking a Kroil bath.

	O.K, so I took the rifle apart and there are no marks on the stock. What it does have is a prefixed serial number which reads J 216384 25 SP and A3 just in front of the fore end. The 25 is probably the caliber marking. As I said before the wood is outstanding with nice fiddleback all the way and no dings. The bore rates as very good plus and the action is crisp and tight. Sadly, the outside metal shows a lot of surface pitting which might clean up. It's moot however because I bought it for the sights and wood.

	So this is a .25 caliber #4 I assume? Don't see many of those either. Lots of .22's and .32RF versions.

	Yes, it's a 25. It's not marked on the side of the barrel where you would normally see the cartridge designation, only on the bottom. The dealer had it tagged as a 22 and that is what I thought it was until I got it home. Boy did I feel stupid but it's no big deal.
