Shooting schuetzen rifles out to 300m (Read 410 times)

	Hi all, Just curious if anyone has experience pushing their German (or any Schuetzen for that matter) rifles out to 300m? If so, which caliber and what load did you find worked best? Was it different than your 100/200 yard load? While in the America 200 or 220 yards was the common distance, from what I've read in Germany and Austria 175m (191 yards) and 300m (328 yard) was the most common distance. Three hundred meters seems pretty far for a Schuetzen cartridge but apparently it was done. In Switzerland, shooting was almost exclusively at 300m. But the Swiss typically used their military 7.5x55 cartridge while the Germans most popular cartridge was the 8.15x46R similar to the 32-40. I'm curious to see how the two compare at 300m so I plan on doing seen tests with my Aydt in 8.15x46R and a Swiss Martini in 7.5mm in the coming months to see what type of scores I can achieve with a Schuetzen and a military cartridge at 300. 	We used the same loads for 200 yard shooting for our benchrest and offhand shooting at 300 yards. Most of us used the .32 RKS Schuetzen cartridge. We used the 200 yard ASSRA target for our 300 yard competitions. Most other competitors were shooting 1,400 fps loads but mine was a bit stronger at 1,526 fps and had a bit less wind deflection over the longer distances. I also had a 236 grain bullet in a 11.5:1 twist barrel with more kinetic energy than competitors with 200 to 210 grain bullets using 14:1 twist barrels other shooters were using which also reduces wind drift.

	I've shot mine out to 500 yds. and the only changes were sight settings. No reason to change powder charges or bullet weights to push the distance farther. Mine were .32-40 Ballard and .38-55 Ballard. Used my Ballard #6 with .32-40 Schoyen barrel and Souther scope shooting 400 yds. with great results. A 200 gr. bullet held well, but was affected by crosswinds and had to correct a lot. Sometimes holding on the left edge of the target to get center hits. About 9" of wind drift at 400 yds.

	Dave, which of the various 7.5 Swiss versions is your Martini chambered for? I'm curious as I've read that some of the earlier versions like GP 90 and GP 90/23 hung around as target cartridges after the GP 11 came out. My K31 military with either GP 11 military or modern commercial ammo is very accurate as with my old eyes and the standard leaf sight it will shoot in 7/8 inch at 100. I'd be tempted to get the factory target peep for it but then it wouldn't be legal for service rifle matches. I did manage to find the proper Lyman mould for it and it is nearly as accurate with the first cast loads I tried.

	Thanks for the reply all. I know wind drift will be more severe at 300m than 200 yards so curious what all has to say on that. I've read that subsonic loads can reduce wind drift but then you're falling like a brick at longer range so that might increase the vertical dispersion. I think I'll push my 8.15mm towards 1400 fps or so and start there. As to my Martini it is proofed for GP11. I've actually working on both a jacketed bullet load (Sierra 168 gr matchkings) and case loads - Lyman 31141 with a GC and 311241 with plain base. I'd like to be able to shoot the Martini in ASSRA events so having the plain base cast load would be for that. I haven't fired it enough with any load at this point.

	Here's a pic of the Martini with the Aydt. The Martini has an adjustable butt plate and a sling so is intended for 3 position shooting, so not only standing like the Aydt. It comes in right at 8 kg.

	Time in the air will dictate how much wind drift your bullet sees. And of course how fast the wind is blowing. In some heavier 25-30 mph winds I've had about 4 ft. of wind drift at 500 yds. And it's really bad if it wont hold a steady speed, and fluctuates to drive you crazy!
