40-50 Sharps Bottleneck (Read 241 times)

	Just picked up a new to me #1 sporter rolling block rifle. I don't know anything about this caliber but want to learn and shoot this rifle. Got it for a good price at a local gun show this past weekend. The seller said that his father use to shoot matches with the gun. I guess some people don't want to hang onto family owned guns. I have 4 of my dads guns that will go to my son when I'm gone with hopes they will stay in the family. The barrel is an original Remington that was cut back from the breech end leaving it 22" long. The bore is in really great shape so it has been properly cleaned and cared for in the past. I really need to find a set of dies so I can shoot this gun. Any information you may offer (loads, molds or anything else) will be greatly appreciated. Thanks for looking. wcp

	Check Ebay occasionally as I've seen dies for this cartridge a couple times recently. Other source is a new die set from C&H4D. They're always great dies and not crazy expensive.

	I also have been looking for a set. They are kind of hard to find. Last I checked CH4D has a somewhat lengthy lead time but the more the demand the quicker they are put through the production. I have a Trapdoor I built a few years ago in that caliber. It shoots a 300gr RCBS bullet with a little 4198 powder really well with little recoil. Good luck in your search. You may also check Redding Lyman RCBS etc... You never know. JMH

	I heard a lot of talk about wait times for C&H4D, but I've never experienced this myself. My .40-50SS die set was the longest wait I've had at about 6 weeks. When I called a couple years ago to ask about .50-140 die sets the lady asked me to hold so she could check. She came back and said they wouldn't be able to ship them for a couple days, and was that OK?

	When contacting CH4D, remember that wait times will vary by cartridge. About six months ago, I inquired about 40-50 Sharps Straight dies and was given an estimate of two years. So I made my own. Currently considering a 40-50 BN project on a trapdoor as well, but need to source dies before starting.

	I don't know about the 40-50 Sharps cartridge, however. I have a couple rifles I formed the cases and reload for which I STILL don't have dies. I did an entire project with a 10.5 X 47R combination gun and never had the dies until a year after I was finished. Did the same with a drilling that was re-chambered for a 9mm based on either the 30-40 Krag of 303 Brit. and I still don't have dies for it. It's a low pressure cartridge, drilling is not Nitro proofed. After fire forming the case all I do is neck size in a 9 X 57 sizing die. You think about it long enough and pilfer through your collection of dies and you might surprise yourself with what you can come up with. I don't have dies for the 9 X 38R Tesching yet I formed and turned 303 Brit cases then fire formed them and load it just fine without 9 X 38R dies. Not bragging, point being, it can be done.

When I called to order mine she told me the dies were out for heat treatment and would be about 8 weeks before delivery. She took my back order and I got my dies way before the estimated time.
