A while back Dave (schuetzendave) told me they'd had better luck with AA #9 than with 4227.  I decided to do a test today with my CPA and it seems promising.   The muzzle velocities were way more consistent and I didn't even have to raise the muzzle like I do with my IMR-4227 loads.  It burned a little cleaner too.  I used Fed LR magnum match primers.

Best 100m 5-shot group was about 1380 fps and measured 0.6".   There also seemed to be something good at around 1420 fps but the winds were twitchier so it's not a fair comparison.

What bullet weight you two using

I’m fairly new to the Schuetzen world. This is my second year of using a new CPA in our local matches.

However, having shot almost 30-years in CBA matches, I can recall Accurate #9 powder being used quite often by shooters in the Plain Base Bullet match rifle category. It seemed like everyone in the category used that powder.

I did use #9 in some revolver loads. But today it’s quite interesting to learn of the variety of other powders that you guys on this forum are fooling with in your single shot rifles.

I don’t shoot #9 but with that 3 groove Borton/Darr designed bullet, I have upped my velocity using 4100 powder to just under 1500 fps in my 14 twist Green Mountain barreled high wall and it is shooting very well. I just finished a CBA match and despite a few wrong guesses when reading the wind came in a close second to the match director who is one of the best single shot shooter in the area who holds a couple of CBA national records. I used to strive for around 1450 but accuracy fell off in the wind. Out of the 40 shots today only a couple surprised me with their impact.
