I loaded for a few years for a 1895 Winchester.  Made a dumb move and sold it as I quit hunting hogs after losing my place to hunt.  I used 30-40 Krag brass as that was what was easy to get even though it was slightly short.  Today I would use Hornady 405 brass shortened to the proper length.  I don't remember shooting cast in it so not sure these loads will help.  Tom

I just made some measurements on some Hornady and Bertram brass.
Hornady 405 wcf
head diameter - .458"
rim diameter - .5384"
rim thickness - ..069"

Bertram 405 wcf
head diameter - .4568"
rim diameter - .5321"
rim thickness - .072"

I just got a message from C. Sharps about what brass will fit their 40-70 chambers.  They said the Hornady and Bertram will fit their standard chamber. They said if using Jamison brass the rim recess of the chamber has to be cut .002" deeper so the Jamison brass must have a thicker rim than the Bertram.

Just measured mine.35 wcf rim thickness.057 and Hornady 405 brass has a rim thickness of .070.it was too thick to let a original 1895 bolt close.if you trim the rim on the front I don't see why it won't work.
