ISSA Black Powder Match in Raton
Print Post
I'm hearing that a few (perhaps more than a few) folks are planning to come to Raton to shoot the ISSA black powder match on Tuesday, July 28th.

A couple of observations:

1. Sunday is registration and open range for getting on paper.

2. If you roll in early enough there are four .22RF matches on Monday:
Benchrest, Off-hand, King, and Traditional American Rimfire benchrest.

3. If you don't mind getting up early on Tuesday you can shoot the Iron Sight Benchrest match that morning.

4. Bring your German gun and shoot the 20 shot offhand match that preceeds that Black Powder match.

So even if you don't plan to spend the whole week with us, there's plenty to keep you busy for a couple of days.

The match schedule is online at

I'd consider it if there was also a BR match for the German rifles.

Many people do not shoot the German match because of that.

Here is a photo of part of the line at last year's BP match. A good time was had by all.
Come, join in on the good times this year!

Frank, you can shoot any rifle with any safe BP load including duplex, even a German Schuetzen rifle.

Joe,  thanks, I've got a good BP rifle but, I've been trying for more that 10 yrs, with Sue and Garry, to get a BR German match going, they said they talked to the Raton people but, they always said they didn't have time for it yet, they can throw in a complete BP match? I even suggested just a 10 shot BR to get the guy's well sighted in.

I would bet that if you came to the current Board of Directors with a list of shooter's names who want to shoot a German BR match, a time slot could be carved out for such an event.

I deleted my post because it was completely inappropriate.

I don't see anything in the rules that say you can't shoot your German rifle in the regular benchrest matches.

Have you ever tried to shoot a original German Schuetzen off the bench? Nothing is BR compliant.

Not to mention that there is no other class of SS rifles, that do not have a BR component and OH in "Schuetzen" matches is very sparsely populated. Many people do not even try. It would be a good way to increase the participation for these beautiful rifles.

I thought you were looking for a German rifle benchrest match.

I am looking for a German BR match so, the BR match would be equal for all shooters. There is much more reason to do that, then there was creating a separate class for 25 cal.

Like all competition, it would also be a way to find ways to make them more accurate. You can't do that shooting OH. The best competitive OH shooters would not shoot rifle that left any accuracy on the table.

There are lots of reasons to do it and it could bring out more of these rifles to the match.
