Ballard smokeless loads

Print Post
I currently have a forged Ballard action that has a.357 maximum barrel on it.  I built it to shoot black powder with breech seated 200 grain bullets.  Everything works fine but now I would like to shoot some smokless loads.  I plan on breech seating the same bullet but would like some suggestions on powder and amount that would be safe.  I have assortment of IMR and Hodgdon in stock.  Would appreciate the help.  Charlie

Ballards may be weaker,

I like 4198 for all my forged Ballard rifles. I'm unfamiliar with load data for the .357 Max case, but generally speaking I'd start at 25% of whatever your BP load is and go from there.
I owned one in .38 Ballard Extra Long which is very close in dimensions to the .357 Max. and I loaded 6.5 grs. of Unique with a 150 grain bullet. That was about 1250 fps in my Ballard.

With 4198 are you trying to match velocities with black powder?  Thanks

A very accurate load that I use, breech seated, in my LW, is13.0 gr (1350 fps) and 14.0 gr (1435 fps) 4227, using the Lyman/Ideal 35875, in a 28" barrel.

14.0 more accurate of the two.

With any smokeless powders I'm always trying to be close to BP velocities and chamber pressures. I've found 4198 pressures are lower than BP pressures when loaded around 1350 fps. At least that's what my ballistic load program tells me. That's for fixed ammo, and breech seated makes pressures a bit lower.
