stevens 44 1/2 extra scew

i have noticed that some 44 1/2 have a extra screw up by the block.im sure one of my books explains it but thought id ask.was it for a ejector type extractor and was it only on 22.

Yes, it is for the kicking ejector for the 22 long rifle. This started around 1911 according to the catalogs. Usually all of the late model 44 1/2's have the screw including the centerfire rifles. The Trade mark Stevens stamping on the left side of the receiver showed up about the same time.

The little spring loaded plunger works in conjunction with the body of the screw to make it eject vs just extract.
