Excellent, Joe.

More pictures, please.

Did you check the twist?

Glad you had better luck with your new project than I had with mine. I sent the barrel back up north to be replaced with another one then begins all the machine work and fitting up everything again. You can bet I will check the bore and twist rate out of the box on this one. Taught me to not take anything for granted. On a Ballard 38-55 chamber is it the long one or the short one?

JMH

I've not checked chamber length. Honestly, I can't tell a difference in accuracy when I use the correct length shells.

The twist is 15 1/2 inches.  I'm a bit surprised. Thinking the Hoch 376-310 bullet is a good starting point.

Getting the feeling this rifle is going to be a no brainer. I need every advantage I can get. Might go a plinkin in the morning.

Sorry to hear about the caliber Wes.  I know you were looking forward to the challenge of some unknown smoothbore with brass you would have to turn yourself. Better luck next time.

Thanks Jack. Long gone are the days when we pieced together an assemblage of pieces and parts and then spent a year trying to make the pet rifle shoot accurate. If the Ballard prints bug hole groups it will surely be a let down, but I'll keep it anyhow. I bought it, I'll suffer with it. Super neat Ballard at a reasonable price. The wood work and checkering are first rate. Thinking I'll take it to Raton.

Come on down and I'll let you shoot it.

Hope it shoots as well as you want it to. I sure looks nice in those pictures. Were those bullets in the picture slugged in that barrel or from another one. looks like just a good wet kiss into the rifling. Easy to seat a soft bullet that isn't tapered, huh?
Let us hear how the shooting tryout goes.

Wes,
I figured you would be so disappointed in that new Ballard d that you would just send it to me. Ship it in the wood box too!

Pat, the bullets in the picture were breech seated in the new Ballard. Fit looks perfect to me. The bullets are exactly groove diameter and they are tapered. Very easy to breech seat with a plug seater.
Was able to seat a .380 dia tapered Saeco bullet also. Might shoot okay. No throat in this Ballard. I never use straight bullets when breech seating. Always tapered or two diameter.

Jack, your breaking up...

thanks Joe, the photo looked to me like it was cylindrical- the marks from the lands just looked about even all the way down the bullet. Old eyes, maybe?
I was seldom ever able to seat a straight bullet into my guns, tho I did try a time or three, looking for the secret load that'd make an unbeatable combo. Hah! like I would know it if I had it considering my meager skill at shooting. Embarrassed
Let's hear how this one performs for ya-
