The auction says 36 gauge. Maybe that's what it actually is. 36 gauge just happens to be .410.

Might be a 40/63?

Or maybe just a choked smooth bore Wink

the .410 designation came out in 1911. It was slightly smaller than the .44 Shot.

Let's see 36 balls to the pound would be about 50 caliber. I believe that .410 expressed as a gauge would be 64.5 balls to the pound.

I have to apologize. I did a quick search for 36ga and saw a magazine article that said .410 was 36ga. So my bad!

I just did the calculation and got 67.62ga, based on pure lead being .4098 lb per cubic inch and a .41 round ball being .036087 cubic inch.

Well, I just hope it's some caliber I have a mold and brass for. If I have to order a special mold and hunt down unobtainium brass again I might as well send it back. Like I need another oddball mold. However, but if it's a 38-40, I don't have one of them. Then I might keep it. This will be Ballard # 16. Who needs that many Ballards anyway. I can only shoot one at a time. My pool table isn't big enough to hold any more.
Just rolled out of the sack, I'm not in my right mind. Where am I? Who am I? Hoping them pits don't go all the way through the action. Loose stock. How do I get myself into these predicaments?

Joe,
You should have saved yourself shipping and card fees by catching a flight back east to pick it up with cash in hand. You would have had it on your pool table by now and would have saved countless sleepless nights,  I would have offered my private jet but it is getting a tire up and oil change along with rotating the tires.

Okay, now that I have some coffee and a breakfast burrito in me I'm feeling better. My outlook has changed. I figure if Jack can have twenty hiwalls and stay married to a Irish Catholic, I should have no problems having 16 Ballards. Bullish on Ballards, that's what I am. Ha ha ha!

Where do you store the spare tire on a Learjet, Jack?

Jack, I'll meet you half way, lets make it Missoula, my best Ballard against your best Winchester. 200 yards from the bench. Twenty shots. 500 bucks.

Missoula?  That is hardly 1/2 way. Looking at Google Maps 1/2 way is somewhere near Cottonwood Idaho. Is there a range there?

But Jack, you have your Learjet, I have a 29 year old Lincoln. I'll pick you up at the airport. You won't have to rent a car.

Ok we will split the jet fuel cost.  Send me $3000 so I can get a fill up.  Oh, it might take a while to get my pilots license.  Not sure my days flying an ultralite will be sufficient experience.

Sounds like you'll have your jet all ready for Raton Jack!  You can fly in into the airport near Cold Beer NM, Colfax County!

Regards,
Joe
