It seems like if muzzle loading a base band bullet it would be very difficult to keep the bullet from tipping while loading. You would need a rod end that is a perfect fit to the bullet nose as well as a means of keeping the rod centered to the bore.

Ballards may be weaker,
but they sure are neater!

It's actually much easier since the forward bands are small enough to help guide the bullet into the rifling better than if they were full sized.

I just cant envision that.  If muzzle loading and the base band is the widest point of the bullet and leads the bullet down the bore then smaller diameter forward of the base band on the bullet can allow tipping  if the bullet nose is not centered to the push rod and the push rod not centered to the bore.
I may be wrong but I dont think bullets for Pope muzzle loaded breach loading rifles were tapered.  The Pope rifles did use a false muzzle with a push rod that fit the bullet. The tapered bullet design came into fashion for breach seating.
Yes it can be done with the right tools but there was no mention of a false muzzle from the person that mentioned muzzle loading the bullet.

I'm sorry but, the "person" that was saying that assumed that on a SS forum that most would know that a false muzzle and bullet starter would be used. Sorry.

Theses are the tools that were used. I made the mold and cut the starter with the same tool that the nose of the bullet mold was cut with.

I used cross paper patches that were captured by flat of the brass cone shaped tool. The tip of the starter fits in it, above the bullet, to contact the nose, w/o any side movement.

If you look close, you can see the single base band on the bullet.

This is a single shot rifle forum.  Most single shot rifles are not cutting edge target rifles as shown. An H&R handy rifle is a single shot rifle so included in this forum but its far from a target rifle.
Lets not let single shot snobbery be a part of the forum.

Knowledge isn't snobbery.

It comes from being inquisitive, lessening and retaining.

I also own a 219 Savage 30/30
