They certainly are not common. I have never seen an estimate of how many were made, and if the serial numbers were mixed with the standard 44 1/2. I don’t think I have ever personally seen one higher than 5000. They are fun to shoot, but trickery depending on the cartridge. Just not much rifle there.
Cartridge and photos would be nice

I own five 044 1/2's, the highest serial number that I have is 46##. It has the trade mark Stevens stamping on the left side of the receiver and the screw for the kicking ejector, so it was made after 1911. I agree with Dellet, the serial numbers go up to around 5000 for the 044 1/2's. I don't think that the serial numbers were mixed in with the 44 1/2's, but it is possible. These little rifles were introduced after the 44 1/2"s had been on the market for a little while.
The 0441/2 largest centerfire factory chambering was in 32-20 and 28-30 Stevens. The barrel shank diameter is 3/4" so that limits the larger cartridge case size to 32-20 or so.

My wife’s rifle is an 044 1/2, 28-30. Barreled by Paul Shuttleworth several years ago. He gave me the wood that was originally for 44 1/2, I had to fit it.

I have one, serial number 8XX, that started out as a .25-20 SS, went to England at some point where it was rebored, rechambered to 32-20 WCF, and reproofed, and had a ladder sight fitted to the barrel. I have since fitted it with a Stevens-style ball and spur lever and a globe front and tang rear sight. It makes for a fun, accurate, easy to load for, and cheap to shoot offhand rifle for our local pistol cartridge silhouette matches. Many of the Stevens 44-1/2 internals will work in the 044-1/2, the obvious major exception being the breech block.

I'm not sure that anyone really has a handle on the dates the Stevens Numbered Catalogs came out (If anyone does, I'd love for you to share), but Catalog 50 came out in 1901 or later and there is not mention of the 44 1/2 or 044 1/2. Catalog 51 which came out after Stevens acquired Popes services (presumed to be 1903) the 44 1/2 and 044 1/2 are listed. It was listed in catalog 53 (1911) and Catalog 54. My presumption is that the 044 1/2 was produced along the same timeline as the 44 1/2 so 1903-1913 ish. Regards, Chris

In the excellent Stevens book set by Tom Rowe and Ralph Hemstalk, there is an excerpt of a magazine article from Shooting and Fishing dated November 1903 that states that the new 044 1/2 rifle will be ready June 1st 1904. So apparently the English model came out a little later than the 44 1/2.
I highly recommend this book set on Stevens.
