Savage Model 1904 with Endres Auxiliary Magazine

I had been looking for one of the Endres Bros Auxiliary Magazines for 22 caliber single shots for quite a few years, the few I saw I thought were overpriced. Recently I found one on a Savage Model 1904, which was a plus since I collect Savage 22's and have a few 1904's already.

By the consistent wear patterns, the magazine looks like it may have been put on the rifle when it was new. I found the magazines listed in a 1922 Sears & Roebuck catalog and the serail number on the rifle makes it later production, they were last cataloged in 1931 as the Model '04 but the guns were still stamped as Model 1904. The surviving records show the Model 1904 serail numbers as 1-192231 and this rifle is in the mid 184,000's.

It's telescopic to fit different barrel lengths.

You slide the cover forward and tilt the magazine up to get a round hanging nose down, it can then be tilted back down, and the round will stay there ready to be grabbed.

Do I understand this gizmo correctly?  It just holds .22 shells in a handy place for a person with a single shot .22?  Almost as handy as a pocket in your shirt?

Well I'll be... Never knew such a gadget existed. Take a look at those catalog prices. Thanks for sharing.

It's a lot handier than a pocket, with the rifle tilted up as you pull one out another pops out in the same place and the same position, I've never had a pocket that would do that! Once one is hanging out it will stay there even if the gun is tilted down. It is harder to load than a pocket......

I saw one of these on a Stevens Favorite that was on GunBroker several years ago, and a couple off of guns a longtime ago. The problem with them if they were removed from guns is getting the condition of a gun to match the magazine's so it would look right. With this one I got all the wear patterns and toning match.
