Stevens 44 1/2 breech block plunger.

My 44 1/2 is missing the breech block plunger. How to tell if it used the block type and would the later style CPA sells work?

Serial number 47xx

If this is the block style you are asking about, then the rifles I have seen, that use it, have a machined cut in the side of the frame that the block slides in. This cut extends straight back from the bored guide hole.  You can see it with the breech block removed.
Can’t help with the question on if the CPA will work.  I believe theirs is a straight pin rather than this block style.  Good question for them.
The rifle will probably work without it for the most part until you get a part.  The plunger keeps the breech block tipped back so the camming of a shell works, if the shell chambers all the way it should not be needed.

The CPA breech block plungers will work fine. Like Bob said,you most likely can get by without the plunger.

Thanks. The kit from CPA is pretty cheap. It will work without but want to add one. May try to figure out how to make a block style. Could braze a block to a shaft or weld up a steel one. 
Anyone have a drawing? Seems like they are supposed to be directional.

Yes,the plungers are directional, the plunger can get jammed in if you try to put it in upside down.

Just for folks information, the plunger goes in just like my first picture shows.   
If I remember correctly the cut out goes against barrel because it needs clearance for the barrel shank.
