Brooks molds

I am about to invest and that is what it is cause these things are expensive in a Brooks bullet mold for my 40-70 Sharps straight chambered rifles. I know a lot of you out there use these molds. So my question is what would be a good design as he has many for this round? Snover, money bullet etc... What would be a good choice. My twist is one in sixteen. Also what bullet weight? My primary lead is wheel weight. Suggestions anyone?

I like his original postel nose profiles. Probably keep the weight to something around 400-410 grains.
I had him make a dual diameter paper patch bullet that finally got my 18 twist 40-70 to shoot reliably well.
Your best bet is to email them and tell them what you think you want, and they'll either call or email you back and discuss it with you.

Fairly new here. I have a Brooks dual dia. PP mold. Bullets weigh 410-415-grains, depending on alloy. This is for a 16 twist
40 cal. 2 1/2 (40-70 SS). I have had good 200-meter test results with it. 78-grains OE 1 1/2.)

Is it a Shiloh?

I don't have a 40-70 but a couple of Shiloh's in 40-65.  I shoot a 400gr Buffalo Arms Money bullet which Bryan Youngberg also used in his 40-70 Shiloh with excellent results.

Also not a Brooks, but if it's a Shiloh there is a very good chance it will like the Saeco #740.   Not a high ballistic coefficient long range bullet, but a very accurate bullet at 200 & 300 yards.

One of mine is a Hi Wall with a 20 year old green mountain barrel and the other is a Hepburn with a liner turned from a probably 20 year old Badger cut rifled barrel. Think I will contact them for their input. Just thought some folks here could advise on what they shoot.

Black or smokeless?  In my .40-70 straight (.40 2 1/2") original Sharps Borchardt and Axtell No.1, the Brooks with their wide and deep lube grooves are not accurate with smokeless powder.  Perhaps to much lube?  I should try only lubing 1 or 2 grooves.  With black they do just fine.

My rifle is a CSA Model 74. Like some others, I watched the Quigley too often, convincing myself I had to have one. At the time Shiloh was a +2 year wait while CSA was 3-4 months.

my .40-70 SS has a 16 twist barrel. It shoots the BA Postell, Kidwell Money bullet, and a Pioneer Gunn-style bullet well with black powder.  An earlier Shiloh with 18 twist shot the Saeco 740 very well.  Sorry, no experience with Brooks designs, but Steve should be able to give you good advice.

Just a note that my 18 twist (new barrel) 40-60 Maynard Whitney Phoenix failed at distance with my 40-65's 400 grain bullets (Jones mini groove and NASA II). Dan Theodore told me that with the 18 twist 370 grains would be it (640 Saeco) and first time I used it shot a 30.

My 40-65 with 340 grain tapered Brooks bullet works excellent with BP. Has very large grease grooves. Steve made it special. Is a shortened Ron Long spitzer. 45 gr Swiss 1 1/2 under a .060 VF wad is an excellent mild chicken load.
