1894 Stevens Favorite 25RF

I have a Stevens Favorite in 25RF, since that ammo is virtually non existent I'm wondering if there is any reason why I can't find a 22LR barrel and extractor to put in it. I might like to return the rifle to original at some point so I don't want to sleeve the barrel if I don't have to.

You certainly could do that. Finding an original barrel for a favorite with a decent bore is going to be a difficult task.
There are ways to get a 25 rimfire rifle up and shooting. Probably the easiest way is to use 27 caliber nail gun loads, mid or low power ones, and breech seat a bullet. There is confusion about the bore and groove diameter of the Stevens 25 rimfire, most will use a .257 size bullet, not a .251 diameter bullet.

There was up until yesterday a Stevens Favorite Model 30 22lr barrel on EBAY. If I understand it correctly the Model 30 was a reproduction ? My only concerns are since it's a takedown would the headspace be the same using different barrels and will a 1915 (or a reproduction) barrel fit a 1894 receiver?
I read about using 27 cal blanks after I posted this and will probably try that first. Thanks for your response. Sure shot wrote on May 12th, 2026 at 1:47pm:

The Savage/Stevens model 30G is a non-take down rifle that uses a cross pin through the side of the receiver to secure the barrel. The barrel shank length and diameter is likely different than the 1894 or 1915 model favorites. I don't know what the measurements are though.

The 94 Favorite went through several different types and sizes of barrel shanks in the course of its production, as well as three (at least) extractor designs (with extractor seats to fit).

You would probably do just as well getting a good take-off  .22 barrel of sufficient size from another rifle and redo the shank and rechamber to fit.  Or get a new blank and fit that.

Agree with this. You have several different variations in just the 94 model. I rebarreled a 94 with a Mossberg US 144 heavy barrel and put it out on a gun show table at I thought at the time was a ridiculous price. Some guy bought and marveled at how well it shot. Still haven't built another 30 years later.

The 1894 had four different extractors, the side or 7 o'clock, the wide 6 o'clock center, the narrow 6 o'clock center, and just before the 1915 favorite replaced the 1894, a kicking ejector as Stevens called it.
Another option, it would be easy to find a 1894 barrel with the correct extractor cut for your action in .22 long rifle, and have the bore lined.

Numrich might still offer replacement Favorite barrels in .22 RF.  Unfortunately I have no idea for which model or which type of extractor.  Maybe someone who has bought one can supply more details.

So it appears that my firing pin may be worn to the point it will just barely make a tiny mark on a nail gun blank. Does anyone know what the firing pin length is supposed to be? There appears to be several different firing pins that were used, this one has the slanted rear. I've looked for a new one on most every site I know of and they all appear to be backordered so I'm thinking if I can get the correct measurement that I will either try to lengthen this one by TIG welding the tip or will end up turning out a new one. I've been a heavy equipment mechanic for most of my life and now in retirement I'm enjoying learning something a bit different. I appreciate the knowledge on this site. Thank you.

Check the firing pin protrusion. The nail gun loads use stronger brass than the original 25 Stevens brass, a stronger mainspring may help also.

Put Wisner's on speed dial. Stevens springs are consumable items. The rimfire firing pins are not harden much, if at all. I've reformed the firing pin tips then judiciously hardened and tempered the business end to save a pin before. Ram sets and breech seated powder coated bullets are by far the least expensive way forward if your bore is decent.

A favorite usually won't fire nail gun blanks. A 44 will.

I have no problem with nail gun rounds in my model 94 25 favorite

If the lock up of the action when closed is not very tight, the nail gun rounds will be hard to set off even with a good spring and firing pin.

I expect to be able to pull the barrel, close the lever and not have the lever drop.

With the barrel in, it needs to be a snap to close the action. No movement, looseness in the lever at all

I mostly shoot converted 17 WSM brass
