Judging by the look of the action I think someone modified a 1885 High Wall action. Reading the seller's description makes me wonder if most of what they wrote has anything to do with this rifle? A ton of work to make the 1885 action into a pistol grip, and through bolt style stock. Not sure why anyone would do it? And the description of the close couple set triggers not functioning as set triggers baffles me even more.

It reminds me of that old tv commercial where the guy with the chocolate bar runs into the guy with the peanut butter, but in this case a guy with a highwall collided with a guy with a Ballard.  And maybe one of them was a little crazy Smiley

Other than no tangs, and a through bolt, I see nothing for the seller's reference to Ballard rifles and their history?

Look close, you can see a seam that starts at the rear trigger and goes almost straight up to the top of the action……

Maybe the back half is Ballard…

The seam doesn't really look straight to me Tom? It almost appears to have the same curve as the stock rear edge of the receiver; sort of like the addition was shaped to fit it and welded on. The back half would have to have a lot of metal added to a Ballard donor to end up with the extreme pistol grip shape that has.
There's just nothing about this rework that's appealing.

Click on the Gunbroker link I posted above and you'll see more of the stock. It isn't any prettier than the rest.

Looks like close-coupled double set triggers to me.  Perhaps the seller does not understand how they work?

Maybe a .30-30?  If a .30-40 will not chamber.

Line #1 sure looks like the Win curvature and line #2 shows a welding under cut.

I don't like the looks of it either but, I'm sure the pistol grip won't wear much!

A O Niedner written all over it. AO was known to be an innovator, unafraid to tackle the weird. Some sort of experiminkle rifle for a close but weird gun crank buddy. A deep thinker...

Niedner also owned a set of roll stamps, and stamped things profusely on things he built, and even tools in his shop. I have Niedner's old Ideal bullet sizing tool and inserts, and even this tool he stamped with his rollstamp.
I think if Niedner did this work he must not have been proud of it or he'd have stamped it too Joe.
