Opinions on coated bullets. Good, bad, or otherwise.
Thanks

I didn't need to try 'em to know I don't want to go there. Two separate shooters I encountered at the range tried coated bullets- one with commercially found bullets and another had invested in the technology to do his own. Neither achieved an increase in velocity, accuracy or ease of ammo prep. All I had to learn.
Asked for one example to add to my motley assortment of curious ammo stuff and called it an end.

They are also illegal to shot in SS matches.

Not something I do for single shot rifles, but…

I shoot a lot of powder coated pistol bullets.  I cast them from reclaimed lead out of the range backstop.  Cheap lead, but unknown alloy.  Powder coating is easy.  A scant teaspoon of powder and a handful of bullets in a plastic container.  Shake it like crazy for 30 seconds.  Works better on low humidity days.  Put the bullets on a tray, repeat the coating step until the tray is full, and bake in a toaster oven.  My toaster oven was $10 at a yard sale.  I used to be real anal about making sure the coated bullets were neatly placed on the tray, now I just throw them on.  Makes no difference on the outcome. I can shoot at .357 Magnum and .44 Magnum velocities with no leading.  Not sure if they are more/less accurate than sized and lubricated lead, but they are easier to produce in quantity than sized and lubricated bullets.

My bolt action .300 BO shoots sub MOA cast and powder coated bullets, so good accuracy is possible.

All that said, I have shooting buddies who think it is too much effort.  Powder coating bullets isn’t for everyone or every shooting genre.
