357 mag for deer

I just bought a really neat Dakota Sharps in 357 mag and am wondering how it stacks up as a viable deer cartridge. In the area where I hunt the average range that I shoot at is usually 50 yards or less and for the last few years I've had great success with the 44/40 with soft cast bullets at about 1000 fps. I'm wondering if the 357 can give me as good results with it's lighter bullets as the 44. Any Thoughts?

In my reading over the last ten years or so regarding hunting with a .357 rifle, a common thread seems to be using a 180 grain bullet.

I know that a 180 grain bullet in a .357 revolver is considered to be big medicine for larger game that fights back.

There are heavy bullet factory loads available.

I would use the heaviest cast bullet that I could as long as I get good accuracy. I have a 200 grain gas check mould for the 35 Remington that might show promise if the twist is right.

Check your rifle barrel's twist and see what the longest bullet that will stabilize, then go to Accurate Molds website and pick out the heaviest bullet with the biggest meplat that will stabilize.  I am not sure how the 357 in a very strong rifle like the Sharps compares to the 38-40 wcf but I know that many a deer has been killed with the 38-40! A bullet like their 36-195Y looks like it would be a good choice!  Tom
