WTB: Shell holder for .28-30 (if such exists)

Hello all-

I'd like a correct fitting shell holder for .28-30. I have been using a .38 Special shell holder, but it's a poor fit. CH4D offers one, but it's the same number as their .38 Special, so I'm not interested in trying one of those.

I have read that RCBS offered one, but that it is now discontinued. Anyone have one they no longer need?

If a dollar value is required, let's say $25 or so.

Thanks...

I’ll look but I’m pretty sure I’m using a 40 S&W. It’s that or a 32-20.

RCBS 27 works on about half the 28-30 brass I have

My RCBS 28-30 die box is labeled "Shell holder Special Group 1" and the RCBS shell holder is marked "28-30 S"

Looking thru Cartridges of the world the 8mm Nambu rim diameter is .413" while the 28-30-120 Stevens rim Diameter is .412", if I'm talking about the right 28-30? RCBS makes a shell holder(#25) for the NAMBU and Grafs has them in stock for $10.39 plus t&s. 40S&W would work but the rim diameter at .424" is a little larger than necessary and probably a little sloppy.  If I'm mistaken about the particular 28-30 just ignore my suggestion and consider that the source is not an expert at much of anything.

OBS, I see a rim diameter of .532 for the 28-30-120. Is there another 28-30? An easier way (at least for me - and sometimes more reliable than COW) is to just Google "28-30 Stevens cartridge dimensions".

Looking at Handloaders manual of Cartridge Conversions has the Rim diameter for the 28-30 stevens as .412" so I guess we need to know if there is another 28-30?

Appreciate the brainstorming, fellows. I believe I tried my old Lyman .32-20, and it was far too small. I've never loaded .40 S&W, but that should be an easy one to find and try. Thanks!

I normally just seat primers with an Ideal #3 tool meant for .38 Special, but I was working with some new RMC cases, and the primer pockets were too tight for that.  Undecided

The rim diameter of my UMC 28-30 brass measures .433, my RMC turned brass, rim diameter measures .412.

I guess the only answer for your request is for you tell us the actual rim diameter of your brass because there appears to be at least 2 different rim diameters for 28-30 brass. Just Jim wrote on Apr 26th, 2026 at 10:37am:

Looks like there can be considerable variations and how fat my finger can type. I'm now going to go with .425 + or -. Just Jim what does your brass measure? People with original rifles, what does your rim recess allow? That might be a possible max. Pinwheel, what does your RCBS shellholder allow?

Hmm... variations indeed!

My UMC cases read:
base: .355"
rim: .428"

My RMC cases read:
base: 355"
rim: 412"

I guess I'll have to open up Cartridges of the World and see if I can find a likely candidate for that RMC brass. Again, I appreciate the sharing of knowledge, fellows!

Handloaders Manual of Cartridge Conversions  simply states that there are no suitable cartridges that can be converted into 28-30. It says that the only thing that can be done is just to turn them from solid brass. Bummer! Sounds like RMC makes more money.

The last issue of the Journal had an article about making 28-30SS from 30-06 cases.  While the process is somewhat involved it turns into a perty good case.
My samples of 28-30 have brass rims from .412" diameter to .428" diameter.  The ones I make can fall anywhere in the middle, but most generally .415" diameter so I know they're mine.

The shell holder I use for most of the cases original and the ones I've made is the RCBS #19.  It's a current holder made for the likes of the 6.8 Rem SPC and the 224 Valkyrie.  The other holder I use is stamped with a #13 that came with an antique set of dies, Pacifics, and that is NOT an RCBS shellholder.  (the #13 shell holder fits a 7.62 x 54).

Thank you, GT-  I ordered a No. 19 RCBS to try!
