Double-barreled rifle made around 1842-48 in Fredericia, Denmark by gunsmith Heinrich Jacob Christian Berg.

He was born on October 6, 1827, baptized on November 16, 1827 in Schleswig. He died on October 20, 1906 in Davenport, Scott County, Iowa.

He was probably trained by his father Ludwig Friedrich Berg, a gunsmith in the Danish army, among others in Fredericia, Denmark.

Heinrich J. C. Berg, in USA he used the name Henry

He volunteered in 1848 in the Schleswig-Holstein Free Corps and participated in the Battle of Bov.

In August 1848 he transferred to the 4th Jäger Corps, 2nd Company (Oberjäger).

He was dismissed from the Schleswig-Holstein army on March 11, 1851 and quickly emigrated to the USA.

In 1852, Berg lived in St. Louis and moved to Davenport in 1853.

Here he settled as a gunsmith and arms dealer.

The rifle is owned by a Danish collector.

Great history on Berg. I don't see many Berg rifles made here after he came to the US, but his style is easily identifiable.

Very similar to my Berg Ballard.

Hoping Bob Carrow sees these posts. Hoping he will see the tips on the forestocks.

I acquired my Berg Ballard from a collector about thirty years ago. That collector owned it for many years. He told me he got the rifle from a very old collector in Idaho who also owned it for many years. One of Henry Bergs sons was a city architect or engineer at Idaho Falls or Twin Falls.
So I sort of assumed the rifle belonged to that son. Frank?

The rifle is reamed for a Hudson bullet with the large base. The throat measures .328. I purchased an old integral handle Ideal Hudson mold with a .328 base that fits my rifle perfectly. The mold came from Joyce Hornadys daughter in Salt Lake City. Was the mold reamed to fit my rifle? .328? Makes ya wonder....
