25-20 SS Help

just got the first few pieces of brass for my new rifle.  New CH dies, virgin Jamison brass, RCBS case lube and graphite inside the neck.  I cleaned the does when I got them, carefully luned and went slowly during the sizing process.  Every piece (3 total) cracked.   Two without the expander ball and one with.  What am I doing wrong?  I don’t want to damage more of this hard to source brass!

Post a photo of a case as you recieved it.

That looks like the brass was un formed, a straight case. If that is true, they are not annealed. You could by the brass both ways from Jamison

DON'T use RCBS lube. Use Either Imperial or Hornaday.

I agree with Frank, but I use both when forming. Spray Hornady then Imperial on top. That said annealing is always a plus and on new finicky sizing I always do it. Your pictures looks like lube  issues, RCBS and Lee lube. They are thick and can create pressure pockets while sizing.

Forming with a sizer is a series of (starting with just a film of lube and don't add more! I use Imperial) a little pressure, pull out and smear carefully, a little pressure, pull out, smear, repeat, repeat, repeat until complete.

Lube generally causes dents.
Cracks are generally from brittle brass

I think you are spot on.  The brass is not formed.  I will anneal and check results.  I’ll also take the lube advise from others into consideration.  Thanks for the help.

Yes. That’s the “basic” brass. Needs to be annealed then you can form as normal. Wouldn’t hurt to take it in steps.

As I’m sure you experts are aware, these are too long after forming.  Any tips on trimming to help me avoid further damage when I try to trim these to length?  This brass is thin!!!
