Winchester Stain Color

In the past some members have asked about duplicating or finding the old Winchester red stain. I know Val for sure has led us to some sources but also noted they may or may not still be available.

When I was a kid I swept floors and did odd jobs when not in school for Mr. Frank Pachmayr in LA. In doing so I tried to talk with and pick his craftsmen's brains when I could. Anyway he had a finishing room with an old man named Ruud Lubar (sp) who gave me a mayonnaise jar full of Winchester stain marked French Red/ Sienna wiping stain in linseed oil. I used it on my old Model 12 and a couple other Winchester rifles. I recall the color match was to my eyes perfect. I never replied to this forums requests because I didn't know the mix, and the mayo jar is long gone

But my old Friend and master revolversmith Ronny Power told me that a sort of Missouri neighbor of his used to sell a stain that was very very close and could be tweaked with just a dash of umber if necessary to achieve the Winchester stain color.

No guarantee here but the man Power was talking about, I found, is Arts Gun Shop in Hillsboro, MO. He's still selling it and it's called French Red and it may pass for the original color. I'm going to order some anyway we'll see. Art is in the restoration bluing business so he knows what he needs

Good luck
Rick

If I haven't lost too many brain cells, this is the old Herter's French Red, which was based on the Winchester stain formula. I visited with Art quite a few times when I worked for Brownells. Heck of a nice guy!
