Hi guys.  New to the forum but long time singe shot shooter and hunter.  This cape buff cow fell to a Ruger in 416 Remington.

Ballards may be weaker,
but they sure are neater!

First Cape Buffalo I've seen without exposed horn across the top of the head? Looks like a Savannah Buffalo.

Just younger, I think, and more prone in the females. All the herds I've seen in southern Africa (a lot, and some close enough that they had to split to pass by the vehicle) have had a mix of some hair to fully exposed horn. It did seem that the more horn they had exposed over their heads the meaner the looks they gave you. None of them I'd want to aggravate by putting a bullet in them. Good choice of cartridge there.

This is a cow.  That is why there is no exposed boss.

Catahoula, (I had a Catahoula Leopard for many years) what country and where abouts were you to hunt the buff? I have a good friend in Botswana who guides now but still has his PH and only a 375 H&H. His older brother was a PH for Ker & Downey and went with us on a few photo safaris. His son (my friend's nephew) is an active PH and carries a 470 Nitro double. I missed meeting Harry Selby by a few minutes as he had just left his favorite seat in the bar in Maun.

Catahoulas are great dogs if you spend time with them and give them plenty of time to work.   I was in South Africa near Kruger park.

Meeting Selby would be something to emember!
