Shhhh! Don't Tell Wes I Put a Scope on my DST HW

Wes said that he would disown me if I put scope blocks on my DST 32-40 high wall so I got cataract surgery instead.  I always thought it would be advantageous to scope it just for load development to rule out poor iron sight techniques.  Well today, just to prove that I have more time than common sense, I made an adapter to mount a scope for my bullet testing session tomorrow,  No Winchesters were harmed in this process.

There are wooden tongue depressor sticks stuck to the bottom of the aluminum angle with carpet tape where it touches the top of the barrel.  excuse the finger over the lens on the close up shot.

Very clever  Grin
You might need to invent a lower height version. Also you could add a red dot and a laser or flashlight now.

If I were to do it right, I would make a proper forearm with extra wood on the left side only to mount the angle.  I would also replace the filler in the rear sight dovetail with one threaded for a screw and secure the top of the angle to it.  Probably install proper sight dovetails for a Lyman scope.  Then again, I did have cataract surgery and should be able to shoot the iron sights

It is an original #4 weight barrel that has markings indicating that it was shipped as a barrel only.  The bore is excellent. The lower tang has never had a serial number which Winchester gurus said was most likely shipped separately as well. All indications are that it was assembled prior to 1909 or so. I have plenty of scoped high walls so leaving this as an iron sight rifle is ok by me.

Just got back from the range.  The scope adapter worked just fine.  Unfortunately it didn't resolve my butter choice issue.  It did seem to allow me to shoot slightly better that the iron sights, but I believe that could be related to the targets being in the shade all morning.  I have two bullets that shoot better than the others, one is too long and tips slightly and the other I got from Bob Zimmerman's estate and I have no mould for it.  I do hav enough to shoot a few matches.  I have a couple of other moulds that I will cast some bullets from and try later this summer.  As far as the Saturday match, I should score a solid second place that just happens to be last place as well.
