Did a quick search and didn't see any threads, maybe because It's been awhile since SR4759 went away. Any way thoughts? I'm using it in .45-70 Sharps with 405 Gr FNPb

I never used it for 45-70, but my love for 4759 in 32-40 and 38-55 is well documented.  The only other serious replacement I found for 32-40 was 4227.  I tried H108 for a while but that was gone before 4759.”
I seem to remember seeing some use of 2400 in the 45-70, but I haven’t shot any 45-70 for a while so my amphibian brain has forgotten.

Or, some have good luck with about 12 grains of Unique. I have tried Unique in my trapdoor with the 405 hollow base bullet from a Lee mould with 12 to 13.5 grains of it. Experimenting, I found that to get the most even ignition I took 1/16th of a sheet of Charmin TP and - please pay attention to this - pushing the square down the neck of the case and stopping 1/4 inch above the powder. If you mark the dowel at the point it touches the powder and 1/4 inch below that where you stop pushing down the TP all will be fine. If the dowel stops before that you have double loaded the powder! Be careful! In using the 5744 I found that 1 to 1.5 grains above my load for the 4759 was about right. At the cost of powder these days using half as much of it with Unique vs 5744 makes a difference.

Last summer I was at a LGS who is closing down and retiring.
I asked to go look through his powder room, was hoping to find some IMR4350.
I found an 8lb. jug.
Down on a bottom shelf, stuffed in the corner were two 8lb. jugs of 4759.
Spent more than I intended to that day.  Grin

For the 45-70 and that weight bullet try H-4198 and adjust the powder charge to get around 1300-1400 fps. From memory (so double check it ) it should be around 25gr or so. A I use magnum primers with that powder.

I use 28 grains of 4198 with a 405 grain hollow base bullet from a Lee mold. A mild load in my #1 Remington rolling block.
