Hello
In regard to the article in the Jan. Feb. Journal of the 1888 International Sharpshooters Union match I received this item from a Heritage Auction a few years ago and thought I would add to the information of the match.
This is a page from an original "The Rifle" magazine, I received it framed.

I hope it is readable as I had to resize to fit the posting requirements

Thanks, Don

That is the way that big matches should be.

In the hey day of this sport, it was a money sport and one of the biggest reasons it was so popular. A good shooter could make a living at it, similar to the way golf is now.

Also, keep in mind, that gold was $20 per once, at that time. It is $4800 today!

And they shot like men by standing on their hind legs! I’d have looked for a good seat in the stands.

A match winner at a big match could win $1000 for first place! At the typical average wage of $20-$30 a month for middle income labor a good shooter could win one match a year and be well off.

So you are saying that if we offered $10000 for first place at Tacoma, we might get more than 3 shooters?  Might have to charge more than $20 for the match to cover the prize money.

Jack, it would be more comparable to Spokane and Raton, you don't get away with $20 for those.

Note, no scopes so, you would have a advantage with your new eye Smiley

Back when Bob was running the Tacoma event, it would cost over $60 to shoot all the different matches. We hoped lowering the cost would attract more shooters Nope!  We haven’t had more than 6 or 7 shooters since the range made up share the range with members, guaranteeing us only the leftmost 9 benches of the 18 total. Kurt who is now the board sponsor has paired up up with the club muzzleloaders so we share the range with them and finally have no ARs during our relays. That worked out well last fall and will be in place this weekend. Still hasn’t resulted in more shooters though.
