Mossberg scope

We had our monthly OAC collector gun show yesterday and the guy next to me had a bunch of inexpensive old 3/4" scopes. All were internal adjustment, and nothing high magnification. He also had some neat 1" old scopes like an early Lyman Alaskan, and an early Leupold.
One scope caught my eye as I'd seen Mossberg scopes long ago, but not with this style mounts on it! The mounts are both marked "Mossberg No. 7" and have twin alignment wires built into the mounts to let the scope slide under recoil, and use typical target scope bases. The scope is very nice, with clear lenses, and nice crosshairs. Marked "Mossberg M4 4 Power" Not my usual target scope, but way to clean to pass up at $60.
Hoping Frank sees this and has some input on this Mossberg scope? Only info I can find calls this combination the No.7M4 as a No. M4 scope in No. 7 mounts.

I had a like new (maybe even new) 7/8 inch Lyman Alaskan in the box it had been sold in and with the added Lee Dot reticle and the paperwork from Lee. I put it on a beautiful highly engraved and inlaid kipplauf in 9.3x72R and took it on a couple of hunting trips in New Mexico. I really liked that scope.

A few decades ago I fitted a Mossberg 44US barrel to a Stevens favorite and mounted one these Mossberg scopes. It shot very well and being quite proud of one of first custom builds, Grin I put it out on a gun show table with what I thought was a ridiculous price. Some gun bought it full price and stopped by at the next several gun shows to comment on how well it shot and I regretted selling it ever since.  Sad

What you have is a scope that Mossberg made for the Spiegel catalog. I think they were made from about '39 to '42.

The idea behind it was so that you could mount the internal adjusted scope, on a rifle that already had scope blocks.

I have one but, mind has a larger and longer, 1" bell. There isn't a scope lens in the bell, it's just glass and is a dust cover.

I robbed the two front mounts off of mine, to use on the other Mossberg 3/4 tube scopes that I have and mounted it on a Winchester 68 action mounted in a Savage 1905 stock.

Thanks Frank! This one has the short objective bell that measures .950" diameter. The reticle end measures slightly larger than the body at .821" diameter. The adjustment knobs for windage and elevation are odd. The side windage knob just has marks on it, but no numbers. The elevation knob is taller and has fine marks, then 50-75-100 spaced between the smaller marks. The windage moves freely either direction with clicks, but elevation requires pulling down on the tiny pointer to release the knob and let it click either direction? It's also 3/8" taller than the windage knob. Length is 16" OAL.
