Excellent Husqvarna Model 33 Fullstocked Rolling B

This is a stunning survivor.  It is a very scarce (in US) Husqvarna Model 33 "Bird Rifle" chambered in 8x58R Saurer (brass and dies available through several commercial outlets). I have no qualms describing its as Excellent Antique Condition. It retains over 95% of original finishes. The receiver has brilliant case colors.  Bore is immaculate.  Fullstocked Model 33 rifkes are hard to find in any condition.  Other than my personal one, this is the finest example I have seen in over 20 years of collecting Scandinavian rolling blocks.  It is unlikely that another like this will come along soon. $1500 + Shipping. Antique ships directly to your door.  Mire photosavailable. .

Why is it called a "bird rifle" ?
Is 8mm Sauer the same as 8mm Danish Krag?

These rifles were traditionally used for hunting a large species of grouse called a Capercaille in Scandinavian countries. These birds typically roost in the top of trees.
The calibers these rifles came in seem like way overkill for a grouse.
I have one in the same caliber only mine is a half stock.

Steve. 😀

gmkmd, no. This one is based on the British 360 2 1/4 basic dimensions. The Danish is a military round in a much larger case. These rifles were made up until 1915 but everyone considers them antiques by appearance. The normal half stocked rifles are much more common than the rare full stocked. They were made in numerous calibers, maybe mostly in 9.3x57R (360), and the 8x58R Sauer is a more rare one. I really lucked into finding my full stocked 9.3x57R (360). They are beautiful little rifles and the contours of the action make it what I would consider the most interesting of any rolling block. Here's a close up of my half stock action.

Ballards may be weaker,

Mine was a full stocked 33A in 9.5x47R which chambered .38-55 brass, but with smaller bullet diameters. Sold it awhile back and it was in excellent condition with all original finish. Mine had a Lyman Special Flexible Base tang sight on it.

These are some of the finest Rolling Blocks ever made, and even nicer than Remington models.

The 8x58R Saurer is different from the .360.

Yes, it is a mm longer than the 2 1/4 like the 25-35 Win vs the 25-36 Marlin. It could be based on the 9.3x72R (or even the 9.3x82R) which are also (360). It has a straight taper where the 8x57R (360) straightens out at the neck. There is a whole family of (360) based brass cartridges in many calibers. Think of it being like the 30-30 family - 25-35, 30-30, 32-40, 38-55. It's the head diameter that counts though from one maker to another it may be plus or minus a thousanth. I have a 6.5x58R Sauer and make the brass by necking down and shortening 9.3x72R. Whatever, it is a rare but easily shootable cartridge in a highly desirable and very unique rolling block that is in great condition.

this seems like an odd category in which to discuss model 33s but, here is one of my full stocks.  Dial caliper at the bore reads .330 so I suspect slugging the bore will give me a larger caliber than that.  30 1/2 inch barrel.
This one has obviously been used, however, the bore is in rather nice shape.

Steve, probably originally when the first ones were made in the 1880s but that was a time of transition to smokeless powders and mine and Vall's never saw BP with us. As far as using smokeless, this is well made Swedish steel of at least the same vintage as in rifles like 1888-1891 Mausers, after all and even then, factory loads for the Sauer were not much over 28,000 psi and around 1900 fps. My half stock was one of the last ones made with a 32000 serial number so of more recent manufacture than my 1911 Colt 45 ACP. Here are the calibers the Model 33 rifle was made in: 6x36R / 6.5x42R / 8x42R / 8x57R/360 / 9x47R / 9.3x57R/360 / 9.5x47R / 10x47R / 10,5x47R (These were taken from the list (You need to Login or Register to view media files and links) which was the most researched standard in Sweden) Notice that the 8x58R Sauer was not singled out as it may have been considered as too close to the 8x57R (360), but of course these were the days when you could order anything special if you paid for it. Here's mine, they have a 3 leaf flip up sight and a horn muzzle cap by the way.
gmkmd, Bigskybound has given you a chance for one and it may be a long time before you see another.

I noticed that the OP's rifle is also listed on Guns International with lots of pictures and at the same price. There was also a very nice 33 full stock listed by someone in
Montana with lots of pictures but it is possibly sold. It looks like it was a 9.3x57R (360) but was lengthened to 9.3x72R (360). It was listed at $2300. I also ran across some 33s online that were in 8.15x46R. These were probably rechambered from 8x44R. Popular actions for reworking.
