WTB 4mm Ammo for a Zimmer Stutzen
Mar 16th, 2026 at 11:50am
Print Post
Just a shot in the dark (pun intended).   Looking for 4mm ammo for a parlor rifle.  My limited understanding is that there are two different case lengths as well as ball/pellet diameters.

Any information relative to this rifle/ammo appreciated.

Thanks

Thank you.  I sent an email to see if this organization is still viable.

It's actually just one guy.  He does not import the ammo anymore.  He does still have the round balls in stock, in several sizes.

What type of Zimmerstutzen do you have? A breech loader or a front loader?

As far as I can tell, it's a breech loader.  I'm not sure it it's a short or long cartridge.

All the breech loaders I've seen (and own) have been in 4mm Kurz (short). The German RWS rounds are very hard to find, as they don't seem to be imported anymore. Sometimes they can be found at large gun shows.

The Czech company "S&B" makes them and sometimes "SGammo" has them in stock. That's where I have purchased them.

Actually most of the Zimmerstutzen rifles were not meant for fixed ammunition.  If it loads like any other breach loader, you are fine.  But if it's the type that has a levered loading mechanism underneath the barrel near the muzzle, it doesn't use fixed ammo.  You would load a blank shell, and separately load a lead round ball of the proper size.  The size will usually be marked in the same location on the underside of the barrel.

Is it also possible to substitute a match air rifle pellet for the round ball by inserting the pellet into the bore-similar to breech seating a bullet?

Alan, I'm sure that's possible... but you still need the primed 4mm rimfire casing.

Here's a quick sample of some of the primed casings (Kurz and Lang), various ball sizes, and loaded cartridges (for Kurz and Lang), as well as the loaded Czech  short cartridges.

I have a number of front loaders and breech loaders, as well as a 4mm Lang k98k bolt action rifle made by Anschütz in the 1930s.

The front loaders are easy to find, but the breech loaders are tough to find.

My rifle appears to match this description, except I can find no mark to designate ball size.   Thank you.
