I really enjoyed the article by Joseph Dobrzynski on Hervey Lovell and the .22-3000.
Many fine single shot rifles were converted during this period to small game/varmint rifles, and while most collectors feel this was a crime, I feel they are a viable class of single shots in their own right..especially if done by known accuracy smiths of the time or companies like Griffen and Howe.
the concern of how to bring in new members might be the right time to include these distinctly American sporting rifles in our match program.
I am thinking of a postal match to start out.  And while we are at  it..how about that dreaded little copper cup..the gas check.  Sure I know it's verbotten in regular matches..but what about an exception for this one?  I realize plain-base cast bullets in .22 centerfire can be shot accurately..I have done it, but how many off the shelf .22 molds are P.B.?...we want new average joe members right?  And besides. that little cup turns 120 years old this year!
How about it? say a commercial woodchuck pictured target at 100yds..not that many 200yd. ranges out there any more especially for average people.  And the modern single shots should be welcome..little sharps, Ruger No. 1 & 3, etc.  For that matter, open it up to the various .25 calibers..I have a nifty .22 Ack. Improved Krag on a Borchardt stocked by Jerry Fisher in the 60's that I am shooting cast thru..would love to try it out.
What do you think guys?   Does this sound like fun?

All it takes is for someone to organize it. There are plenty of woodchuck targets already out there to choose from to get you started….

My Hiwall 32-40 schuetzen was a 219 Zipper when I got it from Jerry Barnett in 1984. He sold it to me for $300. I currently have a German falling block barreled in 6mm Krag I got in trade years ago, never thought of cast bullets in it. A postal match might be fun.

This is our 200 yard Varmint match target. The white center is about 3/4". Granted we are using modern jacketed ammo. But no wind flags allowed which adds to the challenge as our range has similar characteristics to the Beeson range.
