You get what you pay for.  Kowa scopes cost a lot, but one will last several lifetimes (I'm the third owner of mine).

An 80+mm 20-60 scope for $179? I wouldn't give it a week (less if it has to travel down the road to our range).

20-60 would rule it out for me. High magnifying scopes rarely work well on rifle ranges.  80 mm about 25X is ideal plus a few more if it has good glass

My brother, the Birdwatcher, put it this way:

“You can buy all the magnification you want for cheap, but resolution is a Darwinian situation where the more resolution you want, the more you have to pay.”

Resolution, and not magnification, is what lets you see bullet holes at 200 yards and more.  A cheap scope will give you a big image that goes out of focus with the slightest touch of the adjustment, and never is good enough at the best setting to pick up what you want to look at, whether it’s feather patterns on distant birds or target condition.  The image will be big, but it will be fuzzy.

My own knockaround “NCStar” 20 x 60 scope that I keep in the scheutzenwagen for convenience is a good example.  About 40x is the highest I can turn it up and still hope to see small bullet holes in targets.  Higher power just reduces contrast and makes what I want to see harder to do so.  When I want to look further than 50-100 yards, out comes the  Konus or Swarovski.

I own two Kowa scopes and a Swarovski scope, and all are fantastic. But honestly the Kowa scopes are slightly better for less money than the Swarovski for less money. I got the Swarovski dirt cheap at an estate sale, and at the price I figured I'd try it.
My compact Kowa 20x is better at spotting holes than most the 45x-60x spotting scopes I've compared it to.

My opinion after years spotting in our club steel offhand SShot matches Kowa is the scope to have. Having said that have never owned one. Have owner every Unertl spotting model there very good mostly due design and balance objective lens size matching power. No doubt best modern glass and coatings are better. I just like vintage equipment

We use two spotters and one scorekeeper with push pins on a cork board each position, switching off with the 3 or 4 shooters. Moving  through 4 positions makes 8 scopes on the line, get to look through everything , some are poor resolvers, generally high power variables

A couple of years back I was watching a Celestron Regal M2 65mm ED 16-48X Angled Spotting Scope on eBay and the guy started lowering the buy it now price every couple of hours.  I finally pulled the trigger when it hit about $325. I bought it because I thought my old reliable Bushnell Spacemaster was broken.  I eventually fixed it but the Celestron had become my favorite.  I like the extra magnification and usually can see .22 holes at 200 unless the mirage is bad.

Another thing that helps resolution, is a fixed ocular lens.

Hmmm, let’s see.

Chinese manufactured, by an unknown company. I’m sure the glass quality is of the very highest…not.

The typical price for one of their spotting scopes is under 200 dollars, with one exception. That’s the sweet spot for buyers who cannot afford better equipment, but are certain backwater produced optics somehow are miraculously “good”.

The company is quite obviously set up to take advantage of the marketing power of the internet. Oh, and the company website is “not available”.

From what I could find, most if not all the reviews and “buyer recommendations” are from AI generated sites that appear to exist solely to shill their products.

Their main marketing platform is….Amazon, which to a great extent is now the USA version of Temu or AliExpress, only with higher prices.

Good luck getting any service work done, but oh yeah, at those price points I would imagine the idea is to simply junk (yes it is) the scope and, ta-da, buy another.

Did I miss anything?  Cheesy

i have had several "cheaper" scopes over the years and determined that you do get what you pay for, you also get some things you don't pay for
i use a vortex Razor 20x60 with angled eyepiece. turned down to 40x it is perfect for 50 yard .22 matches. slight head movement and get a quick look. back to 60 x and see bullet holes at 200.
convenience and ease of use goes a long way in how good a scope is
i also have a top of the line Nikon which is good for bird watching at 300 yards, but not much good at 50 yds IMHO

I have a 24x63 Unertl but rarely use it. I like the higher power of my Spacemaster or Celestron. I bought a Kronus years back based on some reviews on this site but the one I got was terrible. Extremely bulky with severe chromatic aberration. I sold it quickly at a loss. I think that the solution for seeing .22 holes at 200 yds in conditions of extreme mirage would be to have a drone that is pre-programmed to fly out and hover for a few seconds before moving off to a safe location. Maybe have it hover at about 50’ and drop down as needed.

When I got my Celestron w/ED glass I went with a friend to compare with his Kowa. We spent time swapping back and forth. We compared the two at various distances. Our conclusion was that the 80 mm Celestron’s resolution was just as good as the Kiowa at more than half the price. Several other competitors within a couple of different disciplines have come to the same conclusion.

When I got back into shooting, I had a cheap spotting scope and it was fine for 100yds, but unless conditions were perfect,  could not see further. I switched to using splatter targets and all was good. When I got to silhouette shooting, I needed better resolution so I went to a vortex viper hd 20x60 that I got used. It has worked great for spotting to 500m, and i can see 22lr holes at 200yds. It has worked great for schutzen. The Amazon scope could not do that

I purchased a TSN-1 to use as a backup while my Kowa was being repainted. The objective is 77 mm instead of 82, but it is hard to tell the difference when looking at a target. If you watch Ebay you can find one at a reasonable cost.
