C&H4D dies

I recently contacted C&H4D to ask about .40-50SS dies and after hearing horror stories of 2 year waits from numerous sources, I expected to hear something similar. Instead I was told they had dies in the making, and were sending them out for heat treating. Estimated 6-8 weeks before they would be ready and they were accepting back orders! I gave them my contact info as that's all they required to get on their list. That was last week, and today I got notified the dies were ready to be shipped and I sent them payment!
In all the years I've dealt with C&H4D I've never waited more than 2 weeks, and often was told oddball die sets would be shipped out in 72 hours. So this is actually my longest wait, and still way faster than their estimate! I was in no big hurry, but it is great to get them so quickly!

He is a nice person to talk with BUT. To be told the dies were out for heat treatment and it would be awhile and then the next day they fill your order really speaks to what s going on there. I have been waiting for a year for a set of 38-40 Remington dies. Several weeks ago I was given a sort of encouraging report but. And the but goes on. 🤣🤣🤣🤣

C&H4D has never told me my dies were ready and not delivered within 48 hours of payment. And it wasn't "the next day" it was the next week. I doubt the nice lady who answers their phone is privy to exact dates when she originally told me 6-8 weeks. Probably what she'd been told when they went for heat treating, and it didn't get updated until they returned.
I've bought a lot of dies from them, and usually got them within days, and at the same period had people tell me the wait time was a yea or two. My .50-140 dies were here 3 days after I paid for them.

I've had great experience with 4D-CH.  They always take the time for questions and provide me with answers I need.

Thanks, Vall, as I was lucky enough to get those 40-50 SS dies.  They checked to make sure they had enough for those on the waiting list and had a few extra so they are headed my way.

I think they had some transition issues after Dave passed away? I've done business with them recently and everything was A1

Waiting for years. Must not have much demand.

The thing is to get on their waiting list for whatever dies you want. Without giving them your name, and what dies, and expander size you want they may wait for a long time to make up sets. If they don't know what the demand is without a waiting list, they assume there isn't any demand.

When I got my 30-30 Wesson Ballard, I searched for a set of dies for a while and C&H4D listed them as being on back order.  I finally decided to get on the list for a set and when I called, the lady said to hold for a minute and when she came back on she said she had found a set in the back.

Guys,
In the last few years I went through the similar scenarios with needing SBN dies.  Two different pathways worked for me.  One is back ordering through Buffalo Arms got me two different sets in about a months time(I suspect that BA carries more weight than individuals) and two, for 38-50 dies I asked about individual dies instead of sets(when they checked the stock, they would have one or two of the dies I needed on the “rack”).  These steps worked for me.
