Starline 40-65

Print Post
I just received my wife’s new CPA 40-65 and have begun load work. While waiting for it I accumulated a large supply of Starline brass from various sources. This included 100 new, unfired cases. Upon fire forming this brass went from 2.1” to way short, around 2.080”, some as short as 2.075”. The guy who made the little case stretchers seems be out of business. My only option seems to be forming 45-70 cases to get the proper length.
So I have maybe 300 or so short cases. Some fired, some new. Can they be used to form anything else, or are they scrap?

Ballards may be weaker,
but they sure are neater!

KAL still sells a more deluxe case stretcher that costs more, but works easier.

I've never heard of cases getting shorter after firing? That's really weird!

Having experience with scrapline 40-65 and a CPA, best I can tell you is just go ahead and use them. They will work ok, plus they probably expanded so much in the web now that you'll play the devil trying to get them sized back down to another chamber.

Never had any that short, 2.085" was about it. I just kept them annealed and kept shooting them and now they are 2.100 long. I even have to trim them sometimes. I shot the short ones at the chickens as I only had about a 20-30% chance of hitting them anyway.

Don,
It’s been ages since I’ve seen any new Winchester brass. I’m using Starline in four different rifles. Every one shows expansion at the web.

At one time I had 3 different 40-65's and I had to keep the brass for each rifle seperate. Still have 3 45-70's but with those I was able to use a separate brand of brass for each. My 45-90's I have two that can use the same brass, but the 3rd one is the only one I use Starline in because it's chamber is pretty generous.
I do think if you keep using that brass, resize and anneal after every 2 or 3 firing it'll stretch to where you want it.

I processed 250 star line 45–70 cases to 40–65 cases. All were new and of one lot. I annealed all the cases before I initially sized them. All of them grew past the required 2.11 inches that I needed for my chamber.
I used the RCBS form/Trim die at first. Then I used my RCBS cowboy sizing die to form the next of the cases.
You’re going to find out when you weigh those cases that you have collected from different sources a large spread in the weights. And if you measure the internal volume, you will notice a big difference there as well.
40–50 SBN cases can be made from 40–65 or 45–70 cases.
I had a bunch of star line 40–65 cases that were way too short. I advertise them on a forum, noting the cases were short and I had no problems selling them.

Art,
Yes, I wish I could get hold of some new Winchester. Haven’t seen any for sale for some time now.
Steve,
You’re right about the used brass. Good thing is, I have no investment there except for the 100 new Starline. I’ve ordered some 45-70. It’s not hard to form them.
I’ll continue to shoot and anneal the 40-65 stuff to see if it grows any. Good off hand brass!😁
