Kroil as a bore solvent?
Mar 7th, 2026 at 10:45pm

I was at a match today and one of the shooters was recommending to another that Kroil is an excellent solvent for cleaning the bore when your done shooting. I will say that the bore looked spectacular, but it seemed that using Kroil was o I don't know kind of overkill as solvents go or am I missing something?

Kroil is almost all I use to clean my rifles.  I will grab lead using a tight patch.

Been using it alone for 20 years on my centerfires. Couple patches and it shines

I use it in rifles where I shoot Moly (most of my modern reloads use it on the base of the bullet). Ive used it with some luck with heavily leaded bores

I used to use it.  It works good.

However, gum turpentine is cheaper, and works better, and less hazardous to your health.

I have a can of Kroil but never thought of using it as a bore solvent. Hoppes is my brand. Hoppes is the Hai Karate of bore solvents. I had almost this very same thing happen to me.

I use Kroil more as a lubricant for parts than I do as a penetrant to break things loose. Never tried it as a bore lube though. It's pretty spendy, so I use it sparingly. But it can really make a big difference as a lubricant in trigger pull and hammer drop feel.

I use it when I occasionally have a little bit of stubborn leading to remove.  I've heard that it was popular for benchrest shooters to use in conjunction with JB bore paste.

Hoppes/Kroil at about 4-1 is what I take to a match. Now I don’t win, so take it for what it’s worth. Free!

Wes,
You are not supposed to use Hoppes as a cologne.

On a related note, I recently asked one of the .22 bench rest shooters what they clean with and he recommended G96 gun treatment. I tried it on one of my rifles and thought it did a good job as the 3rd patch came out fairly clean. But then I ran a Kroil patch through it and it picked up quite a bit of black stuff.

First found Kroil in the 70's working for a tug and barge company. At the time they were the Kano Co. and advertised in Boats & Harbors News a bi- monthly commercial marine rag. You could only buy quart and gallon cans. I still have a couple gal cans. They were a mom & pop operation that was run by employees in Tenn. when they got bought out years ago you couldn't buy direct from Kanolabs anymore only distributors, and the price went crazy. Some say the new owners changed the formula and it does smell different but I don't know

I belive they did change the formula.  MSDS just says low vapor pressure petroleum distilates.

I believe the original forumla was wintergreen oil, light distilates and benzene.

If I'd had that original formula that Dave just posted, I would add it to the race car fuel just to screw with competitor's heads.  Maybe Joe's Hai Karate would have a good effect too. Where were you guys when I needed you?
Lately, I have been using my brother-in-law's Kroil. He has much more money than I do.

Ed's red cost $10 a gallon and is pretty close.
We used Kroil to penetrate stainless Swagelok fittings that were operating at 950 degrees C. Very impressive performance.

Back in the early 60's I worked at a Cadillac dealership and virtually all the shop guys used Kroil and swore by it. So do I. Thought to use it on firearms, and still do for far more than it's recommended application. And a little goes a long way, and a gallon goes a long, long, long, way.
