Lee Precision Custom Die for 11.7x56R

Print Post
I contacted Lee Precision to order a FL sizing die for a 11.7x56R Remington Danish rifle. I have a cerrosafe casting of the chamber. Customer service canceled my order and refunded my money. It appears that they insist on 5 fired cases and 3 projectiles before they will produce the die. The chamber casting is not adequate for their need. While I would understand this for wildcat cartridge, I was a bit surprised to hear that Lee Precision is not able to make a die for a cartridge that has known specs and is simply obsolete.

BACO is out of stock of 11.7x56R so I ordered 11.7x51R. I am curious if the die made for a 11.7x51R will work properly for 11.7x56R? I am hoping to use the die to reform .50 Alaskan brass to 11.7x56R.

I also wonder if there is a way to talk to someone at Lee Precision other than customer service to see if that is actually true what the person answering emails said. Does anyone have a good contact at Lee Precision?

Due to past sour dealings there I no longer support Lee in any manner.
CH4D would be my choice , they were way behind for a while but my understanding is they are catching up. The RCBS custom shop has been closed for some time but I've been told if they ever made those dies and the reamers are still there that they will make custom die sets? Hornaday also had a custom die dept as did Redding but it's been years since I've needed any of those services you would have to check with them. There may be a set of dies floating around this group also.

I recently contacted Redding about .40-50SS dies, and they wont make them. So seems they're out of the custom business. C&H4D tells me about 8 weeks from now they will notify me when the next run is back from heat treat and ready to ship.

On the other hand, if you can scratch up some cases you may never have to have dies.

We do not currently have that item in stock, the current lead time is approximately 12-15 months. Would you like to place a backorder for this item?

That's the reply I received from CH tool and die. Would prefer not to wait that long.

I should check with RCBS. I do know a person who had RCBS custom shop make at least one set. He has since sold the dies. I've been looking for a year and haven't come across a set of dies for sale for any price.

Phew! that's quite the wait. Guess they are not as caught up as I was told. You can also check with the chambering reamer manufacturers. Years ago I dealt extensively with Clymer and when ordering a custom reamer they would also make the reamers for loading dies if desired.  It's an expensive way to get where you want to be by the time you buy the reamers and have the dies made and heat treated.

Have you tried fireforming a .348 Win case in it?

I have not. I do have .348 Win cases and .50 Alaskan cases that I was going to use. I will look into fireforming the .348. I am familiar with fireforming .220 Russian to 6PPC.

I tried chambering a once fired .348 and remembered why I hadn't considered fireforming. .348 Win has a head diameter of .553 and the 11.7x56R has a head diameter of .513.

There is always the 45-90 case trimmed to length and with one narrow wrap of tape at the head to center the bulge.

I just suggested that as I read that it is a good case to use to form it from but it didn't mention that it would have to be sized down. If that is the size base you have you could just tape the head of a 45-90 cut to length and fire formed. The bulge if centered would be no problem. I've done this for several different old cartridges to get good brass.

I appreciate the tip. I just received the book "The Handloader's Manual of Cartridge Conversion by Donnelly, John J." last night in the mail and it has instructions on a method of turning down brass to fit. He recommends attempting to size the brass as far as you can and then chucking the brass in the lathe and removing brass to fit. I have access to a lathe so am going to try that. Now I need to find a set of dies that I can use that I can rig up to work until I get the proper die.

So wrapped 2 wraps of scotch tape around 45-70 cartridge and fired a round loaded with black powder and 450 grain bullet. Removed tape reloaded with 250 grain bullet (All I had at the moment) and ffg black powder and fired another round. Didn't split the case and worked fine. Measured .505 right in front of rim. It will be curious to see what it will do with FFG and 450 grain bullet tomorrow.

Found a great solution! There was a 1867 Danish Remington Rolling Block for sale on Gunbroker that included a set of CH4D dies for 11.7x56R and 50 pieces of brass. I won the auction and am now just waiting for the delivery.
