Hello Hildy. What do you like about the place?

We can assume you own single shot rifles? And now you will post pictures and descriptions of some or all of them?

Myself I am partial to antique single shot target rifles. Old neglected cast aside forgotten decrepit old beat up once loved target rifles that need a friend.

Here's one I've been fussing over this winter. It's a Ballard .22 long rifle. Someones old forgotten pet target rifle. I'm sure at one time it had another barrel which was center fire since the rifle is a takedown with an offset .22 bore. Not drilled and tapped for scope mounts. It's been used hard and shows it but it still shoots good. Ballards are known to be good and rumor has it you will live longer if you own one. Everyone I know who owns a Ballard rifle is a genuine nice person.

Very nice looking rifle. Currently I have a Shiloh Sharps in .45-70 and a Norwegian rolling block in 50-70.  I would love to add a Ballard to my collection but it will have to wait till my bank account recovers a bit.

Hi, Hildy and my welcome as well.
About the Ballard... Just go ahead and ask Westerner, he passes 'em around as party favors so we can all live long lives and shoot abundantly.
... about that offset barrel we see now and again- if you ever needed to set the thing back for headspace or something, it would sure be a complicated process, huh?

It's actually a very simple process, and I'm not sure why more gunsmiths don't do it. Simply chuck the barrel up so the bore centerline is offset to one side by .125" when you turn the shank. Usually that towards the 6 o'clock position. Then turn and thread the barrel us usual, then index it to the action. This makes a two barrel switch between RF and CF very easy when using a tapered pin like Joe's or a setscrew like some others used.

I will take your word, Vall. I didn't mean fitting the first offset barrel, but rather if a repair was made that required setting it back from the original fitting. I looks like getting it just so at that same spot might be touchy, or is it as simple as setting back an ordinary, centered, bore? Just askin' Huh
