Thanks very much!

I believe it's a V as the serial number begins with FG and there is no 'ISU' at the end of the stamp. 

I'm more ignorant about guns than you can possibly imagine. So if I'm wrong about this please let me know.

Easiest way to know it’s a mk4 or 5 is the trigger guard. Only they have that stepped front.

It's a Freeland buttplate and they were designed to be able to slide the buttplate up or down to adjust to an individual shooter's hold. They also had a offhand buttplate with single prong that could be slid in and secured to change from benchrest to offhand.
I have the same Freeland on my Model 37 Remington .22 target rifle.
