Stevens 44 question
Feb 22nd, 2026 at 9:34pm

I have a rebarreled 44, with a Hart barrel. I usually shoot target ammo thru this but the question is, would it hurt this rifle if I shoot Remington high velocity thru it?
Thanks

What's the cartridge? Generally speaking, 44s and high velocity should stay away from each other.

I would stay away from CCI  Stingers and other such ammo. The Stinger case is longer than the standard 22 LR and is loaded to higher pressures. I would stay with standard 22 LR and if you really want to be kind to your rifle go with subsonic ammo.

I have a 44 in 22lr and I stay strictly with standard velocity out of respect for it's age. Your new barrel will definitely take it but there is a lot of discussion about the pins bending due to high pressure in this model. Not sure if the 22lr is part of that discussion but I stay on the side of caution. I understand when you see a  model 44 with a droopy lever, that is generally the teason.
I use mine for paper punching and more interested in accuracy than killing power. A lot of folks and myself use the CCI std velocity with good results.
Great little guns and a ton of fun.

This topic is very germane to me and my model 44. Mine is chambered 38-55 and so I load quite soft for it. I'm not really concerned with high pressure and receiver or cylinder ruptures which is the most common concern these days with high velocity cartridges in long guns and revolvers.

There is no history that I'm aware of with failures of this type in factory chambered 44's. But I'm relatively ignorant on the energy path through these falling block actions so I'm learning a bit about how the cross pins can distort and fail with too much pressure. Growing up with bolt and lever action rifles this is new info to me

The stevens 44 action will handle any 22LR ammo regardless of the pressure/velocity, assuming it fits into the chamber.  Remington high-velocity is no problem.

X2 on the Stevens model 44's.
With the 1894 and 1915 favorites, I would only shoot standard velocity ammo in them.
