The Springfield '03 match rifles often had air gauged barrels way back when. There was a mark on the ones that had passed the test for uniformity and even an occasional 'regular' rifle would be fitted with one. 
I had an '03a3 with one and it was a very good shooter. I believe it was a replaced barrel because the rifle had been built by Remington.

I believe the star on Springfield 1903s indicated top grades from the air gauges donated to the University of Wisconsin - Madison.
