What size is the Standard American Target?

In the July 1st 1922 issue of “ARMS AND THE MAN” there was an excellent article on“Off Hand Rifle Shooting” by H. M. Pope.  The article was introduced by Ned Roberts noting that; "From about 1888 to the late 1920’s, Harry Pope and Dr. W. G. Hudson were two of the most skillful, most expert offhand riflemen in the United States, and it’s extremely doubtful if there were any riflemen in Germany, Switzerland or any other country who could make higher offhand scores at 200 yards or 200 meters than either of these famous experts."  Ned further states that "in 1904, H. M. Pope had made six 10-shot scores of 97 and twenty-one of 96 at 200 yards offhand on the Standard American Target, while Dr. Hudson had made at least one 10-shot score of 99 out of a possible 100 on the same target at 200 yards offhand, as well as a 100 shot score of 922 out of a possible 1,000 on the Standard American Target."

So, what size is or was the referenced Standard American Target used at the time?  Thanks.

All I could find with 10 min of Google searches was that the black scoring ring was 12”

bpjack, thanks for spending the time.  I did find one old thread on this forum that mentioned the Standard American target on which the 12-ring is but 1.41 inches in diameter.

The Standard American target was 4 feet wide, 6 feet tall and a hit on the paper outside the scoring rings scored 1 point.
Other scoring rings:
2 ring - 46.0"
3 ring - 34.22"
4 ring - 26.0"
5 ring - 19.68"
6 ring - 14.8"
7 ring - 11.0
8 ring - 8.0
9 ring - 5.54"
10 ring - 3.36"
11 ring - 2.33"*
12 ring - 1.41"*
* 11 & 12 rings added for bench rest shooting and scored 10 for offhand matches
Below are the commonly used versions of the Std. Amer. target for offhand and bench rest. The image on the right is a size comparison of the Std. Amer. and German Ring targets.
This info is from my book The Golden age of the American Schuetzenfest and can easily be found using the Index.

There are indeed two Americas. Simply put, it is not the haves and have nots. The two Americans are in reality divided into those who do and those who don't.

RSW, thanks for the details.  After some additional research I discovered the following link which does not match up with the ring dimensions of the Standard American Target you displayed.

When researching my book, inconsistencies in "historical" information was rampant. The dimensions I stated were from data published back in the Schuetzen era so I accepted it as fact (as is the info your posted). I think it would take someone who as acccess to and measures an original target(s) to sort it out. Perhaps that someone will step forward here  Huh

The first volume of The Rifle (predecessor to Shooting and Fishing) was heavily devoted to trying to get a target that everybody could agree to use so scores could be compared with some kind of reproducibility.  A. C. Gould was a big booster of this enterprise, and a lot of shooters, including Farrow and Rabbeth, contributed their ideas and designs.

Page 100 of The Rifle (Vol 1 No. 9 January 1886), shows the one designed by Charles W Hinman and, according to the caption, was "Adopted by the Riflemen of America December, 1885."  The rings from 1-10 are dimensionally the same that RSW has posted, although this first version "only went up to 10," like the amplifiers most groups used in the movie This Is Spinal Tap.  Continuing improvements in guns and shooting components and techniques necessitated the addition of 11 and 12 rings later, in order to break ties.

There was also a Standard American Rest Target, which was for benchrest shooters at forty rods or 200 yards.  Unfortunately my search skills for references in my compendium of Shooting and Fishing are a little rusty; I'd have to devote a few hours to getting them back in order to find all the references.
