FS Stevens Mod 45 44 1/2 in 28-30

Print Post
Nice Stevens Model 45 with 44 1/2 action in caliber 28-30.  Rifle sports double set triggers as well as a desirable and expensive Stevens tang sight and windguage  front sight. Wood has a few dings and bruises but is sound.  30" barrel with a bright shiny bore except there is some minor roughness just in front of the chamber. $2000 plus shipping.
Thanks
Phil

Very tempting since I live in easy driving distance of St Joe, but I can’t afford the divorce.

Nice model 45 with quite a few special order "extras".
Full octagon, extra length 30" barrel,  possibly a heavier weight barrel than a #3 since it has a # 3 swiss buttplate, rather than a #2, and double set triggers. All cost extra.
If I didn't already have 2 .28-30 Stevens I'd be all over this .

It's killing me here. I really don't need another rifle. Though I don't have a 28-30 and have wanted one for decades. 4.5 hour drive. Would spend the night in KC and see some friends. It's almost my birthday!

I'm tempted to send it to CPA for case color and a ball, spur lever.

Stop! I'm not the new owner, but if it made it this far in the shape it's in, leave it alone. If it was rattier, well, OK, but the old ones that are in good shape should be cherished for what they are- scarce and lovely. Just my opinion, ya know?

X2
I would only re-do basketcase or parts guns or guns that pretty much aren't original anymore.

It's kinda funny that the seller and I spoke of drilling and tapping barrels for a scope. Neither of us could do it but would welcome one already done.

It's your birthday present so go ahead and get it color casehardened. A ball spur lever would be nice.

I guess with a ball and spur lever it would look similar to a Model 51 with a slimmer stock.

My personal opinion on a fine old original gun that has survived unmolested for all of these years is that it should be appreciated for what it is. Unmolested period guns are getting harder and harder to find and we are very fortunate when one lands in our hands. What I think a new owner intends to do with a gun after I sell it plays a big part of who I offer it to. True, it's yours to do with as you please but if you can't appreciate it for what it is and see the beauty in it I think it's a damn shame. I have owned some fine single shot's over the years but the ones that have never been modified ( ruined usually ) are very few. You should be very proud to own it as is and appreciate it's history. Beautiful gun as is. I would rather have a gun with no finish than one that's been refinished if it is otherwise unmolested. That Stevens was someone's pride and joy for over 100 years and all who owned it appreciated it and had the sense not to modify it. There are plenty of guns out there that have already been fooled with and butchered. That's my personal opinion.
